I second tea tree oil but may need to get a prescription antibiotic ointment to kill the bacteria if acne is the result of a bacterial infection. |
| old fashioned boiling water in a pot, have him put his face close to the water for a few minutes, have the pores open up and squeeze them ... |
If it's on the nose, particularly, Biore strips can work really well. A couple of tips: Get the Biore brand. Don't try to save money with off-brands. Store knockoff brands do not work nearly as well -- just trust me on that! Have your son wash his face but not with a scrub, just water and a bland cleanser like Cetaphil. Rinse really well. Then get a washcloth and get hot water on it, wring it a little and hold it over his whole nose for a while until it just starts to cool down - then heat it with water again, hold again. This is basically just a quick steaming to open up the pores and it really does make the Biore strip much more effective. Apply the strip. He may need to wet the strip itself, not just his nose, and more than the directions say; it may feel a little slimy and too wet but if he sits and watches TV and fans his face with a magazine or whatever, it will dry. Wait until it's VERY dry, totally dried out and stiff; that could be 10-15 minutes but it works best if it dries totally like paper mache! Then pull it off gently and slowly. It may take a couple of times but it really can help. He should do it weekly. |
| Adding from post above -- be very careful about tea tree oil. In its pure essential oil form it can be very strong and can sting, and some people's skin is sensitive to it. I would really avoid it for this problem -- it is an oil and that won't remove a blackhead. It does have antiseptic properties and is in some skin care products but I'd get the blackhead out first and then maybe apply an OTC astringent to close the pore, but would not use tea tree oil for that, myself. (And I do use it, just not on my face, which is sensitive to it.) |

He loves it. He has oily skin and touches his face all the time. He spends about 30 min on the weekend using the extractor and with the pore strip on. I had used one for a few years and he kept having a recurring pimple. I stuck a lancet in the pore to open it and then used the extractor to clear it all out. He's been hooked ever since. |
Makes it worse initially. |
| I am an adult with occasional acne and am finding this thread useful - I never learned this stuff as a teen! Only "treatment" I ever used was Oxi. Does anyone's teen use the teen proactiv? My 12 yr old has a lot of teeny tiny bumps on his chin/nose which his derm said is acne. She had no suggestions other than to start washing with an otc wash with salisylic acid. |
| Just get the blackhead remover tool from any drug store target etc. simple takes two seconds |
Same here. Both my DD and I tried Biore strips and all they did was hurt when peeling them off. Not one blackhead came off, though I think a layer of skin might have. Awful.
