Anyone work at Amazon in VA? What's it really like?

Yes- we knew that. Nonetheless they can be a barrier to hiring, messy and stressful.

PP the stock vests along the way (original offer was 4 years to 100% vesting - negotiated to 2.5). You can't ever be sure anyone won't "cut you". Perform well and don't fear.

My concern, was that they have such high turnover, they try to cut people even if they are performing well. As a cost saving measure and to avoid paying out fully vesting options.

That hasn't been my experience.

If the paybis high, then your RSUs are shit. Normally the pay is low with high RSUs. Ans obviously the big bucks are in the stocks.

Im a poster that declined a few years ago. I'd have well into 7 figures in stocks today.

Oh I see it wasn't super generous stock option grant, it was the run up from Amzn from $200 to $850 a share. You couldn't have predicted that.

I negotiated extra stock and faster vesting to offset the ridiculous non compete. AWS Herndon.

Non competes have no teeth in Virginia. None. I'm in management, we put them in front of you as a deterrent. If we go to the mat you will win every time. But good for you!

My family member said the non-compete was insane, basically barred you from working in any even tangentially related field forever. He called an attorney from his training, attorney said to sign it, basically unenforceable.

This this this. In Virginia? Forget about it. Non competes are a joke, as they should be.

Yes, but as with many IT companies, you really can see it coming. Not at THAT level. I ended up at Palo Alto and made a mini fortune, as i went pre IPO. People areound here make a job out of playing the game with the IT IPOs and stock run up with RSUs. My DH is doing it right now with a white hot tech company.

Well it is a grant. If you are handed 5,000 RSUs 50% vested at 1 yr, the rest the next 3..id call that a pretty generous grant.

Do you have kids? Jumping from pre ipo startup to startup or working at aws is quite risky and has long hours...

What is the salary range for engineers at AWS, and if they make the 4 year + tenure what is career progression? Product manager? Business development?

Another Fed here, had wondered the same thing. I've seen several positions at AWS that looked like a good match for my skillset (engineer, not IT - more hardware and power systems). Not looking to jump ship yet but always good to have a Plan B, particularly considering the current lack of Federal hiring.

Random that this popped again. Yes, we have kids. Hours are normal, upside is huge and once you are in job mobility comes easy.

No risk, no reward and anyways it's a numbers game. Try enough times, you'll strike gold.

Not true. Well drafted non competes are enforceable in Virginia. That doesn't mean Amazons are.
