PSA: Avoid making a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle, or give PLENTY of space

Motorcycles should be outlawed along with bikes on main roads

This.

My uncle died on a motorcycle with a car didn’t see him.

I would love to see motorcyclists, wear high visibility clothing, maybe it would help.

Oh please. I live near a 4 way stop where cyclists rarely stop. If you are on the road you need to obey the rules of the road. Full stop. When it's my turn to move per the rules of the road I am going to go.

I get excited when I see a cyclist gearing up to blow though a stop sign opposed to one where I am lining up. Some level of telepathy must be in play or they simply pick up cues, but up until this point they typically have slammed on the brakes and and don’t force the issue. I’ll never understand why drivers let guys in spandex stare them down.

Bumping this thread to remind folks of this issue. Actor Treat Williams died:

The actor's death was confirmed to PEOPLE on Monday evening by his agent of 15 years, Barry McPherson.

"He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off," McPherson says. "I'm just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented."

Other reports say he was going straight on his motorcycle and the car made a left turn into him.
" Investigators . . . believe the driver of a vehicle was turning and did not see the motorcycle driven by Williams when the accident occurred. "

https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/12/entertainment/treat-williams-death/index.html

When a driver causes a death like this, they should go to prison for 1 year. Same thing should happen when a driver hits someone legally in the crosswalk and they die.

It's absurd that negligent idiots like this driver just get a slap on the wrist with a minimal fine and an insurance rate hike. They don't even get their license suspended. The only time they are punished is if they are inebriated. It's not enough.

Or the law is sophisticated enough to realize accidents happen and sometimes majority of the fault is with the victim. If you’re riding a dirtbike with no headlights at night in Bethesda, well stupid stuff happens to stupid people. I feel worse for the driver who most likely isn’t built for the mind games that come with taking a life.

Did you read the first post? Two-thirds of motorcycle deaths are where the motorcyclist had the right-of-way and the driver made a left turn in front of the cyclist. That's pure negligence on the part of the driver. If you cause an accident that takes a life on the roadway through such a blatant mistake, you should get a year in jail. Same if you hit a pedestrian in a crosswalk who had the right-of-way and kill them. Boom, one year in jail.

Toss a couple of UMC soccer moms, lawyer dads, and grannies in jail for a year. I bet you driving deaths and incidents plunge fast.

Right? Because soccer moms, lawyer dads, and grannies are the problem and not illegal dirt bike riders barreling through intersections without lights on

They are if they aren’t paying attention. Those groups are all very distractible.

+1

Bad drivers should be held accountable for their actions. Don’t turn unless the intersection is clear. Don’t make u-turns on busy streets.

Sounds like their is something inherent on motorcycle riding that causes a blind spot in these types of incidents if this happens so often. People are not making a conscious or subconscious decision to discriminate against motorcycles. The pat warnings of "be fair and look out for motorcycles" will not help here

I agree. I know someone very special who died recently on a motorcycle. What motorcyclists don’t understand, or don’t care about, is that they are unprotected on the road. Accidents happen all the time. They have no chance against a car.

I hate driving near motorcyclists. I give them plenty of room and try to get away from them. I have even rolled down my window and begged them to be careful before. Some of them are insanely reckless.
