The problem with low SES middle schools -unfair!

I was not aware that some elementaries are zoned to different middle schools.

Stop smoking crack. RM and QO are not ghetto schools. Yes, RM has IB, but that's not the majority of the schools. Just look at JW racial breakdown.

I don't do crack, I don't smoke, I don't drink. I standby what I said.

Then get that large stick out of your ass.

No wonder mcps is in ghetto. This idiot is a parent? God help us!

55% FARMS

Algebra completion rate by grade 8 is 36%

So basically - hardly any white or hispanic kids - negligible asian.
Predominantly low income
But the big issue is:
Predominantly low achievement

My daughters peers don't care about school and they aren't interested in any enrichment programs. She was so sad when her old friends invited her to one of their after school soccer practices at their school. I felt like we belonged there. I am hoping this adjustment builds character or does something positive for her. I am also hoping she doesn't lose interest in her education. One of the programs this school does offer is a truancy court program. Can anyone out there say that their school offers this???

Interesting. When posters talk about bethesda and potpmac schools with 15% Hispanic kids and and 8% black kids, but the majority are white, people seem to think that is a decent amount of diversity. Hmm.

Here comes that stupid canard again...you realize that in the country we live in, 72% are white, only 12% are black, correct?

So a school where kids are 72% white, 12% black is perfectly diverse and proportionate.

Whereas a school where kids are 72% black, 12% white is...not.

So, Mike Pence, how is the post-truth lifestyle going for you?

Montgomery County is NOT 72 percent white. It's 45 percent white, assuming you are talking about non-Hispanic whites. http://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045215/24031

Following your link:

White ALONE, percent: 61.3%

And, even if it was only 45%, my main point holds: it's plain stupid to forget the basic demographics of the country we lived in.

Signed,

Immigrant who's never voted Republican, but finds stupidity like yours deeply troubling

You are being ridiculous. A school can be diverse in and of itself, regardless of the demographics of a county. Diversity doesn't have to be "diverse in comparison to something else."

Rent your house out and rent a house in friends' neighborhood.

We have great extracurriculars at Cabin John MS and our school is very diverse.

No, she's talking about a sixth grader and after school activities, not team sports.

I hate reading the foolishness posted on this message board sometimes...but at least it lets me know what my neighbors think.

Ugh.

Middle school is hell in the best circumstances, IMO. Be there for her, encourage her, but don't have such a chip on your shoulder about all this.

Of course you have great extracurriculars at Cabin John - your FARMS rate is 8% where OPS is about 50%! So from an SES standpoint your school is not diverse.

From a race standpoint, OPs school is not diverse - it is majority black. But really, the SES is the problem here - kids cant afford extra curriculars.

OP - can you get a COSA? It seems only fair that immersion students can change schools for special programs - you should be able to also.

That is a totally obnoxious reason for a COSA request. They are meant for people with real hardships, not because OP wants her DD to be around more white kids.

Coming from parents in a good school district, am I right? Who wouldn't be annoyed that their kids school offers no enrichment and is full of low achievers. If wanting a good learning experience for your child is entitlement then everyone on this site is entitled. And yes, middle school sucks but it sucks more if you have no friends and aren't fitting into the culture.

Correction, kids that are more like her. This wasn't about race until a couple other posters made it about race.
Anonymous
OP made it about race by saying her daughter wasn't welcome at basketball bc she is white. But alas, DD is probably just no good at it. And that's ok. It does suck to be at a mediocre school, but OP has described her child as a mediocre student....
