Is PA an East Coast state or a rust belt state?

There's no "coast" in PA, so how can it be "east coast"?

I say Rust Belt.

Pennsylvania is Northeast more than east coast. The western part is very much like Ohio, but the eastern part is very much like NJ. The middle is very rural and I can see why people say it's like Alabama, but the Lancaster area and area around State College is simply gorgeous. Pure beauty. Pp's were right that there is a lot of "rusty" areas scattered around in Western PA and in the very Northeastern area, but central and southeastern is farming and horse country. Philly has a mix of blue collar and wealth, like any big city. You can't classify PA as one thing because it is a big state. Just like VA - it has a little bit of everything and those of you from northern VA would not want to be grouped with some of those uber conservative southern VA nutjobs. And then there's the adorable town of Charlottesville in the middle. PA isn't much different.

Eastern PA is Mid-Atlantic, which is different than East Coast.

Western/Central PA are Rust Belt.

I'm from PA and this is accurate.

Some people think that East Coast & Northeast & Midatlantic are mutually exclusive?

Because I'd consider PA part of all three. At least the eastern side.

FWIW, I grew up there.

Yup. Part of all three.

And Pittsburgh is really a gem that I think is the best part of the whole state. But is it pretty depressing outside of that. Beautiful country, but depressed.

+1. Most of the people posting here aren't from Philly. There isn't much of an economy in Philly anymore -- an old manufacturing city which is now just an ed-and-med city -- not much different than lots of other secondary markets out there.

Main Line is beautiful and a bastion of old money. Definitely east coast. Rest of the state is a dump.

10:02 here. F*** you. I love my state. DC is pretentious, overpriced, and full of arrogant dweebs.

Hilarious. You aren't trashy at all. Perfect example of low class pensy.

Philly is at best a third tier city. Nobody is excited to get an offer in Philly. It's a college town kids bolt from the day they graduate.

NP

It's so very DC to allow any amount of hatefulness, as long as it's said in a classy way. Being "classy" doesn't hide the ugliness of what you posted. Real class doesn't stoop to that kind of spitefulness.

Main Line kids all move to NYC and SF and LA and DC. Nobody wants to stay in Philly. Area has been brain draining for decades.

Yep. Penn is right in Philly and Philly STILL can't hold on to Penn grads; most of them breathe a sigh of relief when they get an offer in Philly for any kind of full time job bc that is a "safety offer" until their offer of choice comes thru from NYC or SF or DC or Boston.

That south-central part around Lancaster isn't really rust belt. Neither is Gettysburg, Carlisle, etc. State College. Those are the religious, farming areas.

But, Scranton is definitely Rusty. Erie, Pittsburgh, Allentown, etc.

None of what you wrote makes any sense, PP.

Eh, I actually think it's pretty accurate. The old coal and steel towns absolutely meet rust belt criteria. Also, having spend a lot of time in central PA, I would agree with the characterization as fairly religious and rural overall. Philly is... Philly. It's not my fave, but that might be because my inlaws live there
