Read Richard Rodriguez and Richard Hoggart's writing on the 'scholarship boy'. Normal for stupid parents to shun kids who get educated.

There's nothing cool about living in some backwards rustbelt town with a heroin and domestic violence problems and parents who don't value education. Stop glorying the 'simple' life.
