Total shock: unsafe levels of lead in glaze in bathtub

My kid definitely drank bath water a few times. Or maybe more than a few. I didn't "intend" for it to happen, but it happened and I was not surprised.

But lead can also be absorbed through the skin.

It really isn't absorbed through the skin anymore since gas is unleaded. It is mostly inhaled.

I think many people are being very dramatic. Just get a new tub if it bothers you. I yanked out a cast iron tub. It was not a big deal.

Check out the CDC website:

"Human skin does not absorb lead in water."

Now please stop spreading misinformation!

You need to take some time to get through this.

This is a joke, right?

I think someone is being excessively cruel to the OP. All small children get bathwater in their mouths. There are an abundance of cases of children having high levels of lead because of a leaded bathtub. It is not an overreaction to realize this problem must be resolved before small children move into the house.

He's got a side business replacing tubs for paranoid mothers.

OP - no reason to be freaked out about this, but, if it makes you feel better, replace it. It won't cost "thousands and thousands of dollars." A new tub installed will be around a thousand bucks. They'll cut or break up the old one and carry it out in pieces. But again, I think you are worrying needlessly. There are plenty of other things in life that are going to screw up your kid worse.

Here's how I taught mine to stop:

Got a really dirty potato from the farmer's market, and told DD and that potato was like her and needed a bath. Put potato in a clear cup of water. Eww, gross and dirty! Then I poured the gross potato dirt water into DD's favorite cup and offered it to her as a drink. She, of course, wrinkled her nose. Now when she's in the bath and wants to drink, I reminder her of the potato water and how all of her dirt is now sitting in the water that she wants to drink.
