How poorly educated are you? From the destruction of the Spanish Armada until ww1 the UK was the undisputed leader of the free world. Ww1 & the boer war was Germany trying to gain power. You have heard of the British Empire- you know the one that the sun never set on? Unlike other European colonial powers, the Brits worked with their territories, thus leaving a lot of them better off & still eager to be in the commonwealth. Russia can never be the leader of a 'free' world not can China b/c those nations aren't technically free. The EU will actually become more powerful, it also depends on how skillfully congress limits trump- if they are as good as they were with Obama we have nothing to worry about. This country is becoming more liberal, net migration will end & white people who are uncomfortable will keep moving away from urban centers & becoming more & more disenfranchised while those who are fine will have to actually work super hard b/c the US won't be benifitting from the developing worlds brain drain anymore.

I was referring mostly to the notion of nation states operating with fewer collective alliances assured by treaties. Not economic/militaristic empire or empre-driven dominance. Indeed, we might be returning to the latter, albeit in a somewhat different form.

i think the EU probably otherwise manages to hold together post-brexit (by punishing the UK, who spirals into significant downturn). that makes the EU the global economic power with sufficient economic and military heft to try to counter russia and china, to try to woo India and Indonesia, etc. but in a trumpian world, they may be left significantly outweighed. if trump really undoes NATO, or leads them to believe they cannot depend on us, EU will need to invest significantly more in military, withdraw their own overextensions abroad, etc. France is more engaged abroad, for the most part; Germany is probably the more inclined to throw their weight around internally. but i imagine that in a world in which the US cannot be trusted, the remainder of the EU feels the need to pull together. we shall see.
