Odd comment from your teacher and wonder how THAT could come up in conversation. After all, it could just as equally not be higher.

Dra 30 is very low/very lo average. Many k and first graders have Dra up to 48

Don't believe this..

I am elementary teacher. They only test one level above their grade, so, how can k and first grade have anything above 28 ?

This (from another teacher). Plus, please give an exact number of children in first or second grade who you personally know have a 48. Hint: starts with zer...

Plus, anyone who's had kids go through elementary school has seen multiple kids catch up to and often surpass early readers by 3rd or 4th grade.

This is not true in APS

If it's true in your school fine but not all.

But since this is an AAP forum AND this particular question is asking about your rising AAP kid's DRA from second grade, it has to be asking about FCPS kids only. Arlington, Loudoun, etc. don't have AAP.

So Arlington and other kids and counties "don't count" fairfax is so big it's scores are the only thing that matters? The question was @ a score and a grade. Arlington tests until kids fail. @$19k a student budget , accurate identification is definitely completed. However on kids where testing is routinely completed I can definitely say more than half the kids at my kids Asfs were greater than this score. And yes none of these kids are gifted bc gifted means nothing really in APS

Just FYI. I just moved to fairfax so that is why I'm reading the thread But even so, I think the question deserved an answer.

WHile the question was indeed about AAP and FCPS, this forum is for more than AAP and FCPS, even though it dominates. "Primarily for discussion of Fairfax County's Advanced Academic Programs, but open for discussion of AAP and similar programs elsewhere as well. "

Reading scores are not used to test for giftedness. They are not very accurate for that.

Yes, the FORUM is about more than just AAP but this particular QUESTION was only about AAP and the DRA level of a rising third grader. Therefore, responding with info about testing from other jurisdictions isn't really responsive.

??? I was not commenting on the OP's question I was commenting on the PP's statement that the forum was about AAP and implied AAP only.

NP. More than half of the rising K and 1st graders had a DRA of 30 or up to 48, or greater?

My son is in a rising 4th grader now but going into 2nd AAP his DRA was 28. He did just fine in AAP and didn't even struggle the first few months like some of his classmates did. DRA won't affect performance in AAP. Lack of ability to grasp information quickly, would.
