Don't let facts get in the way of great hyperbole. |
And don't let your checkbook get in the way of believing that you have a superior dog. |

I want a purebred dog because I want the qualities of that dog that you cannot get from a shelter mutt. If I want a Dutchy, german short haired pointer, English bulldog, or a Belgian Malinois I want them to be of the standard - so I know the temperament.
A reputable breeder doesn't breed often and will take the dog back so that the breed doesn't end up in a shelter. You are paying for those health and temperament guarantees. I |

Its your money, and you decide how you spend it. Let the shelter folks spend theirs their way, and its no ones business.
In answer to the question pure breeds run into the thousands. |
Actually, I've only ever had rescues. I just don't think outright lying about the availability or euthanasia rates of shelter dogs helps anyone. It makes pro-rescue folks seem out of touch with reality and easy to dismiss. Are too many shelter animals euthanized? Yes but not on the order of thousands a minute. Do many have lovely personalities? Sure but many don't and many come with emotional scars that will never go away. |
| The shelter is full of pure bred dogs that assholes paid for but then didn't want to take care of. How about you save a life of perfectly wonderful shelter dog instead of dropping 2-5k on a breeder. Seriously? Both mine are rescues. $50 each that were already fixed and had all their shots. |

We paid 1800 to a very reputable breeder for one of our German Shepherds. The other is a rescue. The rescue is healthier and has a much better temperament.
Even a great breeder can't guarantee a healthy dog. They will take them back, but it's hard to give back a dog you have bonded with. There are no absolutes when it comes to breeder vs rescue. |
wrong! I have allergies too. I've had multiple dogs, all from rescues or shelters. You do know you can get the same dogs that you'd get from breeders at rescues, right? |
I've had multiple dogs from rescues and shelters. None with behavior issues, at all! Are you sure it's not a parenting issue? |
...yeah, keep telling yourself that ha! |

+1 We have a poodle/schnauzer mix ("schnoodle") that doesn't trigger any of my DH's severe allergies. Our neighbors have a rescue golden retriever who is fabulous. |

I've had breeder dogs, shelter dogs, and dogs that I've rescued in other ways. I love them all and each has their own personality.
However, whenever people get all riled up about others NOT rescuing, I do wonder. Do you think ALL breeders are bad? I know that you want everyone to rescue their dog, but I want to know your thoughts on reputable, non-backyard breeders. I researched for close to 2 years before settling on the breeder I chose for one of my dogs. That breeder LOVES dogs and doesn't do it for the money. There are plenty of other people who do, too. Why is that so bad? I will be looking for another dog to add to our lives soon as one of ours just passed away, and I haven't yet decided whether I'll rescue or go the breeder route. If I go breeder, it will not be a backyard breeder. I don't know why that's so wrong. |
| If you want a pure bred dog of a certain breed, you will not find it in a shelter. There are many beagles and Shepard crosses (wonder why?) But if you want a bulldog, certain kinds of terrier, purebred hound, greyhound, Italian greyhound, purebred Corgi, whippet, King Charles spaniel ect ect, you wont find that at a shelter near DC. |
