Political Discussion
I was at an event at the German Historic Institute at "The Second Blair House", at 18th & NH, and read some of the history of the Blair family. They were principled, anti-slavery, and very influential. Josiah Blair argued the Dred Scott case, and was a big supporter of Lincoln. But the pulles away from Lincoln as they realized that he was moving toward letting freed slaves stay here, rather than sending them back to Africa. I recall speaking to a Moroccan Jew in Israel who said the only Arab you can trust is a dead Arab, so I suppose those who want to "repatriate" are the Blairs of present day Israel. |

Interesting story about Blair! Thanks for posting it.
The main difference here, though, is the Palestinian citizens of Israel weren't kidnapped and forcibly brought to Israel the way that Africans were brought to the US. They were living there before Israel came into existence. |
| You honestly seem so vitriolic. |
| I enjoy opinions, but not 'blinders'. Good luck to you and your one-sided cause. |
Gee, sounds like you need more than a beer! |
Um, no. "An honest liberal"? Nice to categorize an entire population. That's like saying "A generous Jew!!" Think about it. |
We liberals and conservatives have been making blanket characterizations of each other on here all along, so what else is new? You were supposed to note that it's just like a conservative to make such a comment. You liberals can't get anything right! Note: I'm just a cantankerous old liberal myself, trying to lighten things up. |

Even Fox News has discovered "Angry Conservatives":
|
| There are some angry conservatives on this board - no doubt about it. However, not all conservatives on this board are angry, but we become a bit peeved when sane, considered POVs that are at odds with the Dems are dismissed as the rantings of angry conservatives. This works both ways - I hope Shepard Smith does a story today about the "frightening left-wing bloggers" - you can find nut jobs both places for sure. |
True dat! (Some of my best friends are crazy left wingers...) |
OP here. OK, I was baiting you. It's pretty infuriating to have your legitimate political concerns dismissed because you are out of office, isn't it? Personally, I think there is plenty of blame to go around to both parties, but you have every right to be angry. Your anger shows that you are engaged in the issues of our country, and that is to your credit. Now remember that the next time your party is in office. Don't be so quick to call a liberal a coward, a complainer, or unpatriotic because he / she disagrees with you or our government. We just left an era where liberals were badly beaten up for opposing the war or certain aspects of the war on terror. It wasn't right. We are all Americans, even if we disagree on how to run this country. Don't make political disagreements into some sort of litmus test of loyalty. |
| eh--don't often feel 'angry' (thanks for allowing for that though)-more often veer between at times appreciative, at time amused, and at times deeply concerned by current administration. --happy conservative |
| By the way, my family members are fighting the war on terror--certain aspects of which you are 'opposed to'. By all means, be opposed. And keep your leadership honest. The truth is, so many of the previous policies this admin is picking up on...so what are you opposed to? And whose feet are you holding to the fire? |
Totally totally totally agree with you. Seems I have heard conservatives who do not consider waterboarding to be torture called a whole lot worse than unpatriotic. Honestly wish the debate could stay issues focused instead of being reduced to name calling. So long as the Chris Matthews and Bill O'Reilly's of this world are the "articulators" of the positions of the left and the right and they do flame throwing, I don't have much hope for that really. |

The problem is that the Republicans keep putting the fringes front and center. Seriously, do you really think Limbaugh, Palin, Newt, and Cheney are gaining ANY mainstream popularity for your party? Do you think you can win elections or change public opinions with these characters? I really like George Will or some of the other print conservatives but the Fox News commentators and anchors are complete idiots yet they tend to be the media face of the Republican party. It doesn't help that the conservatives are attacking the moderates in their own party. As a centrist Dem I miss the days of a more balanced Republican party. Anyone remember the term liberal Republican? You had a better exchange of ideas with the far left and right cancelling each out and the center shifting left and right in a more practical way. Politically what is going on with the Republicans is a windfall for the Democrats so to an extent I can't complain but its never good for the whole when the opposite party completely implodes on itself. |
