| $8K, DH took a second job and moonlighted for a few months to save up the money. |
His parents bought our first house. I'll take that over them buying the ring any day. I don't care if its pathetic. |
Wow, you and your husband couldn't get your first house on your own? That doesn't sound very adult like to me. |
| I refused an engagement ring. I insisted on two stainless steel bands for $15 each. I don't understand the point in buying expensive jewelry. |
Oh we could but it certainly was a nice gift and far more useful than them purchasing my engagement ring. |
Some people like expensive jewelry - to each their own. It surely isn't a mark or success or happiness on either side of the spectrum. |
+1 |
In many cultures this is normal. Parents are often very much involved in their adult children's lives. Not everyone in the world lives like affluent white Americans. |
| 10 K. Put it on a credit card to get the miles and then paid it off in full tbat month. No savings or help required. |
| Married woman here - OMG - that is so much money!!!! I would not marry someone who wasted that much money on a ring. It is absolutely insane. |
| Sold my car. Wife LOVES this story. The gesture was worth at least 2x the actual expenditure (which was $6k). |
I spent 10K. It's less than I make in a month and didn't even cut into savings. Granted the 10K also involved taking apart her grandmother's ring and repurposing the other stones. You really shouldn't bash people for their choices. The only one who ends up looking bad is you |
Agreed!! My ring was $12k and it was probably one of the greatest days for my in-laws when my husband wanted to pick out my ring with them. I would have accepted a $2 ring and they knew that. In my DH's culture, the parents of the groom buy the ring. |
No. Maybe I should have specified - my then fiancé. Currently my DH of 6 years, who now outearns me by a third so I made out alright. Thank you for your concern. |
get over yourself. My friends have 20 to 30K rings, their DHs can afford it. |
