It has Living Tree where you can post to the entire school, your grade or your class. To me that qualifies. I wish more folks posted school wide questions on it but its there. |

More effective communication - when our charter moved to the permanent location they communicated long term plans (and showed architecture drawings) or restoring the tennis courts.
Those tennis courts are now a soccer field. There was no sharing that there was a change to what had previously been communicated rather an announcement that they have secured funding for the soccer field. |
| We are at LAMB and are very happy with the school. If I could have a wish list I would prefer clearer and more-streamlined communication from the administration, van/bus transport (instead of driving from Capitol Hill), and more field trips. |
It only qualifies if it works. I have never seen any actual discussion on Living Tree. Has there just been nothing to discuss this year? |
It's definitely way under used. That said, I haven't had any major beefs or problems with the school this year (which is flying by quickly). If someone posted on there about an issue that concerned me I'd definitely chime in. On a side (and related note) I do wish there was more progress on the play spaces. Lots of talk, meetings and some fund raising but nothing that I can see happening on the ground. |
Why don't you post that on Living Tree and see if it gets any response. My guess would be no because nobody would see it or know how to respond. |

OP here.
Thanks for the feedback. I know no school is perfect so it is interesting to see the things that other HRCS are lacking. One of the things that I wish my DC's HRCS has is more classroom space. The class ratio is great but it just feels like the kids are crammed in the small classroom. Own cafeteria/gymnasium will be nice too. It is kinda frustrating to think that DCPS have all these nice facilities (huge classrooms, gym, library, auditorium, field) but the schools are not doing well :-/. |
that is a good one. I am disappointed that my kids won't get that. |
Yes, I could care less about a gym or cafeteria, but real music instruction and a real art teacher would be nice. Oh and language. our language is a joke |
|
OP here
Despite all of your school's shortcomings, can you say you are still generally happy at your HRCS? |
| Yes still happy. Our alternative is a very low performing DCPC EC school with an even worse high school. |
Just posted it on there, so we'll find out either way. Will report back tonight or tomorrow. |
| I just wish there was some kind of location preference for charter schools. We love our school, but although my block is full of young kids that it seems everyone will go to different schools based on their luck in the lottery. |
OP here. I completely agree! |

If you want your children to go to school with their neighbors, choose your IB school.
Because charters aren't constrained by neighborhoods many attract a student body that's racially and socio-economically diverse, with the common denominator being parents committed to a school's vision (and lottery luck). Look at their demographic profiles. They 'look like the city' in all its complexity much more than schools that reflect income of the parents who can afford housing in the surrounding neighborhood. |
