Is it possible for a family of 4 to go to the movies for under $50?

Go during to a matinee. If you want candy/water buy it before at the store. If you want popcorn, splurge on it. Who goes to the movies that often anyway? I think popcorn is a special treat and it's good! (In a gross way but whatever)

Rio in the morning. $6 per ticket

Yes- go to university mall theater. Tickets will be $18 total. Add two kids' combos, two large popcorns and two large drinks for about $30. Skip the candy. Done.

AMC is $7 or under (non 3-D) every single day before noon.

Regarding food....not around here, but a theater I was in Tennessee recently had a sign that mentioned bag checks. I didn't see any one get checked on the day I went (it was also the first showing on a Saturday morning), but I wanted to mention it for those that sneak in food.

I rarely get food at the movies, or drink for that matter.

We often do dinner and then a movie. So we aren't ravenously hungry when we get to the concession stand. Then as for popcorn we buy it but then I usually have soda and water bottles in a shopping bag under something like a jacket or something we actually bought. We often go to the theater in downtown ss, so we usually do dinner there.

I always get my children snacks if they want them. We don't go to the movies often so it's a treat.

I grew up poor (and sometimes hungry) and while my children aren't fed a constant supply of junk, I HATE the idea of them going hungry and/or wanting something to eat and not getting it.

Go Saturday morning. It's $6.99 at AMC. No foods needed.

We go to a family run theatre in Frederick. No frills. Feels like back in the day. Cash only. Movies are a few months after release. It works for our family of six.

PP here. Sorry I meant to say it is $4.50 all tickets, all the time.

This is really the first time some of you have heard of matinees? I almost always went to matinees - why pay full price if you don't have to?

Someone mentioned a $5 day at a local theater - I think they also do that all day at the theater at Fairfax Corner. I think it is Wednesday?

I think some Union members can buy movie tickets discounted if you do it thru their 800 number.

Go in the morning. Cheaper tickets and more reason to say no to the junk food.

Movie theaters make their money from Concessions, not the tickets. That's why a bottle of water is $4. My family will buy the popcorn because it's a treat but we also bring in water and the $1 candy boxes. Definitely recommend matinees and sign up for the Regal card or AMC rewards program.

It shocked me when we went to a theater by my parents house and it was $4/ticket. I would check out theaters within an hour or so of your home, and find a cheaper one.

You can get tickets from Costco as well, which saves you a few bucks (every little bit helps).
