Just a tip - best maxi pads hands down are Stayfree Ultra Thin Regular with Wings. They aren't plastic on top like Always. Feels like cotton.

It's these: http://amzn.to/1n4jlAj

Second tip - it's ok for her to use tampons now, but they leak so she should back it up with a pad.

Just an FYI - every woman's body is different. Any pads with wings always drew blood outside of my underwear. Wings are no good for my body.

You are a great dad OP! Make sure she gets her nutrition right, ( omega 3s, vit D) since it helps with PMS. great advice from everyone

Will one day learning to manage this on a personal level be enough for her or should I be prepared for her to stay home on Friday, too?

I would play it by ear if you can. Everyone's body handles it differently and she may feel worse tomorrow than today. Some girls suffer from cramps, diarrhea, headaches, etc. (once she's adjusted to having periods though, if she's having severe enough pain to miss school she should see a doc). Extra undies in a ziploc, a few pads of different absorbencies, and some motrin (if it's allowed in school) are a must for the backpack. At any rate you're doing everything right and being very gracious.

+1

Most girls/women don't need to miss any school/work due to periods but I know a few whose cramps are so severe that they sometimes have to stay home for a day when their cramps are at their worst (they also need prescription meds for the pain). That's fairly rare, however; most just need a couple of doses of Advil to get through the day without too much discomfort (cramps are usually the worst the first 2-3 days --mine have always peaked on day 2 & are usually gone by day 3 but, again, that can vary). Then there are some lucky girls & women who hardly get cramps at all! So, yeah, play it by ear as you don't know which category your DD will fall into (& it the amount of pain can change quite a bit each cycle for some).
