There may not be whites at Banneker today, but it will just be a matter of time.

Not at all convinced. The school has very strong traditions rooted in AA identity/achievement, with support from Howard Univ.

Good. I would still send DD there if she wanted to go.

I live in LeDroit/Bloomingdale and have zero interest in McKinley or Dunbar. DC is in 4th at an HRCS, but we would go private, charter, or move.

you are astoundingly naive. "getting schooled" is a lot more problematic now than 20 or 30 years ago. The number of guns and violence in many DCPS schools does not show on MPD reports. Im not saying this happens at Bannekar and McK but if you want your yuppie kids schooled-why not newly renovated Dunbar. They will learn a WHOLE LOT. Have fun with that.

I am pretty sure PP meant getting 'academically schooled.'

Exactly how many reports of guns and violence don't make it to MPD? The last I checked, every suspension, whether violent or not, is electronically recorded in DCPS' student behavior tracker. Also, when was the last time a DCPS student was shot during school?

School incidents may well get to MPD but are not generally shared on the various public alerts/listservs that MPD uses to inform the public about crime reports and recent arrests.

I live right by McKinley and am on every alert and neighborhood blog. Very rarely do I hear of a serious problem, or observe any bad behavior by kids in McKinley attire.

Agree. I think the students at both McKinley and Banneker are smart and studious. It probably helps that students must maintain a pretty high GPA to stay at those schools.

she said "getting schooled by those kids" so I highly doubt it was "academic" schooling

My good girlfriend works at McKinley and many of those students struggle to maintain a 2.0 GPA.

If you receive below a 2.0 you must transfer to another school.

So, this is the ultimate joke. How do you ensure high test scores? By transferring out underperforming folks. Easy peasy.

This is exactly why private schools are "good". They control who goes to the school.

Charters CANNOT do this, without going through multiple hoops. McKinley Tech and Banneker somehow can, as a matter of routine. Big difference.
