I guarntee your previous plan was crappy and didn't cover the minimums required. At least preexisting is now covered and a whole slew of things. |
I'm not the PP but in the 16 years that I've bought insurance through an employer, none of that was true. Never had preexisting condition exclusions, no lifetime maxs, same medical coverage. Free BC under the prescription plan is the only thing new. |

^^^ That and big increase in premiums and severe limitation on covered medications. |
I wrote the comment and I've been attributing the limits in medication to the US being one of few countries that doesn't restrict drug costs. Same drugs are available in other countries but we have to pay exponentially more. In a way I don't blame the insurance companies for restrictions on certain drugs that the drug companies are gouging them on. I've never understood why the ACA didn't address drug costs. Esp with the push to high deductible plans (which I'm ok with). |
That's because if you get insurance through your employer, the risks are mitigated so they don't have pre-existing clauses. If you tried to get private insurance as a self employed person, there was such a thing as pre-existing condition exclusions. And yes, they did have lifetime max caps. I knew a women who had breast cancer, and she died because she had reached the lifetime max caps. I also remember seeing it on my insurance details. Also, my BCs were never 100% covered. |
I never said the caps didn't exist. I said I didn't run into it through employer coverage. The PP I responded to stated that they "garunteed" minimum coverage wasn't offered and preexisiting conditions would have been applied. It hasn't been my case, nor with the others who responded after me. |
Yes, because you had employer sponsored insurance. Plans on the individual market were much worse and more expensive. |

Damn that free birth control! I bet if we weren't giving birth control out like candy, my rates wouldn't have doubled

Hi. I set rates for health insurance.
One huge cost driver this year is new hep c drugs that cost $250,000 a year. Many other specialty treatments also came out. Insurers have no control of these costs. The drug makers do and the pp was right that drug costs were not addressed in the aca. Cancer treatments etc all cost a lot of money. People spending more on care and drugs causes these increases. |

Medicare can't even negotiate prices -- do you really think the ACA was going to pass if it also included drug discounts?
Big Pharma OWNS Congress. Until we have single payer insurance, we will never get out from under them. |
Definitely shop around on the health exchanges. And play around with covering you and your child through your employer and then your spouse separately on the exchange. |
| What free BC? I just had a baby and my generic BC is $38/month. I have UHC PPO. The BC I was on before was brand name and less money. |
They don't have to cover every single brand. If you call United, they will tell you which brands are free. |
