given new, later, start time, can I drop my 4th grader at the (closed) door at 8:30?

I have to get to work, and my new boss is a stickler for punctuality. Last year, when the doors opened at 8:30, I barely made it at 9AM...Now with school opening at 8:45, I worry.
My daughter is a responsible kid--heck, she's in fourth grade.
How much trouble will I be in for dropping her off at 8:30?

Why are you just now figuring out this? You've clearly known for months.

In what way does your post answer the OP's question, which is, "Can I drop my 4th grader in front of the closed doors at 8:30?"

Can your child walk from home and lock up after you leave?

OP, I hear ha. We are at a Tier 2 school so the earlies we are supposed to drop off is 9:10!!!!! For that reason, I now have to shell out $400 a month in before care. Thanks a lot, MCPS.

People are more concerned about their job than their kids. No wonder our youth is so screwed up.

People realize 9yo's can be unsupervised for 15 minutes.

And who is going to feed my kid if I'm not concerned about my job.

Lol at this whole statement.

And that these 9 yo's enjoy eating and having a safe place to sleep. Damn, irresponsible parents!

Hee hee, that's a good one, PP! (You didn't mean that sincerely, did you?)

I'm a teacher and the bell time changes mean I now pay $1000 total for before and aftercare. Previously, I only needed before care.

OP,

Don't pay attention to nasty comments. You know your child the best- go with her a little early for the first week, usually the office staff is inside even if doors are locked. See how many other parents are there and make friends with them to see how much help can be exchanged so that you could make it to your work on time. By October, make your girl do the best essay on why she would like to be a patrol as patrols are supposed to come early and are allowed inside the school while doors are still closed.

Our school said you can drop off starting at 9:15. Is yours really open at 8:45?

Here is a novel concept, OP. You ask a neighbor or another parent to take your child to school on time. Then you repay this person with doing them a good turn. Barter services if you cannot reciprocate in the same manner.

Another thing is that you tell your boss that the timing of the schools have changed. You will not be the only employee with kids in MCPS.

If the new time is an inconvenience and you need help from other parents - then get on your school's listserv and ask other parents for solutions.

LOL, what are they going to do with the kids that get dropped off early? There's not much they can do.

+1 to this! We're also at a Tier 2 school that doesn't start until 9:25 and the earliest we can drop off is 9:10.

I agree with one of the other PPs. Drop your kid off a few blocks away from school and just have her walk over if that's possible. Or else, I think it's fine if you drop the kid off early. We have some benches in front of our school, right by the steps and kids do hang out there. Especially a 4th grader. How is the school going to punish this?

Are the crossing guards there early enough? Go with her a few days and see what it's like? Our guards get there early enough that I could probably drop my kid off around 9, but we'll see how next week goes.
