The closer you get to NYC, the closer the costs are similar. Once you get near Hartford and west, it is cheaper.

House in Darien for comparison. Is it similar to what you have now?

Scarily similar to what we have right now but with 0.25 acres more than what we have which is nice.

Yes, but there are more middle class areas interspersed than there are here. Try Norwalk for that budget. Westport is very nice, but there won't be many to choose from. Try for something near Compo Beach if you can. Great community.

Norwalk is gross and full of immigrants, and not in a good way.

Definitely don't live in Stamford then. It's sort of inner-city CT, and the public schools aren't good. I used to live there. It's not dangerous or anything, but it's not really a family town like Westport or New Canaan or Darien. Are you trying to just live on his salary and not bonus? Your budget seems pretty low for a hedge fund.

No i will be working too but not making much (around $60,000). We don't have a firm salary given yet so I was just using his previous salary and what we paid for our house in DC as a gauge.

You are gross and as one of the CT natives who has posted above, this sentiment is one of the reasons I won't move back. CT's "exclusive" towns are generally snooty and look down on the cities. Not particularly tolerant of diversity. If you aren't white I would think twice about living in places like New Canaan or Darien.

Fairfield is great, but the commute is LONG down 95 to Stamford. It's only 20 minutes without traffic, but at least an hour with traffic. He could possibly do the train.

Okay whatever, just trying to point out to Mr. and Mrs. Hedge Fund that they aren't going to want to live in what has basically become Colombia.

I agree with this. There are LOTS of people who live in multi million dollars homes who work in finance in CT. You will most likely be considered "poor" there. Also, many of the women grew up together and have moved back to their towns. It's kind of like high school.

We would preferably like something that has a small town family feel if possible. From what I read Stamford is more like a big city right? Is the crime bad or is it pretty safe? It sounds like it has changed and developed a lot over the past decade or so.
