How old to not need after school care?

My 10 YO walks home from school around 4. My 8YO gets off the bus and walks two blocks and gets home around 5. I get home at 5:30. Working out great so far.

My middle schooler has been staying home alone after school since he was 10. Same with my daughter,

I paid for extended day in fifth, but he hung out with his friends at their houses intend of going.

No extended day in middle school for us, but I did shift my hours to get home early. After sixth grade, no one uses check-in.

OP, my daughter started coming home on her own at 5th grade/age 10, but it was only for an hour.

This year she's in 6th grade and her older brother is in 9th grade. They come home alone around 4:45 to 5:15 once a week, and my husband and I don't get home until more like 7 that one day. So that's three hours more or less on their own but they do have each other. And, I'm not wild about it. But it is OK.

I think 3 hours alone, every day, is a bit much to expect at middle school. Yes, some kids do after school clubs, etc, or parents manage to stagger schedules so someone can be home a little earlier.
