Changing table on dresser

we did this and it was SUPER convenient. Used a $20 three drawer dresser we got off craigslist. It was the perfect height. The size was just the size of a changing pad so DH attached a small minishelf to the side to keep wipes on. We kept diapers, extra wipes, diaper cream, etc., in the top drawer. It was super convenient and way more tidy looking than many changing tables. You could also hang some cloth pocket-type things on the wall above the dresser for easy grabbing--a couple extra diapers, wipes etc.

We also bolted the changing pad (there's a little strap on the back I think) to the back of the dresser with a screw so that it wouldn't slip. It was totally great. Then once kids were done with diapers we whisked the changing pad away and used it for their toys and crafts. Incredibly money saving and space efficient.

Initially planned to do a changing pad on IKEA dresser. Once baby was here, wound up just using one of those portable changing mats on the floor pretty much from the start.

+1. Gently remind your mother that it's been YEARS since she's done this.

No, please don't. A diaper is a diaper. Our baby's room was small, too. We put shelves and some drawers in the closet for clothes and got a changing table.

I don't know how you would bulky packages of diapers and wipes in the top drawer of of a dresser. And, honestly, I didn't want to change poopy diapers on a nice piece of furniture. But that was me. I would not get both a dresser AND a changing table for a small room - way too cramped, you just have to choose for yourself which one you would prefer to have.

I have a keekaroo on top of a dresser and it works fine. I keep supplies in the top drawer

Exactly what we do. Works great.

My mom is in town and is driving me nuts by saying that it's going to be very had to change the baby on top of the dresser. She want to know where will I put the diapers, wipes, creams, etc, in a place where the baby won't kick them off? Who has BTDT and how did you set up your change table on top of your dresser? Do you have a shelving unit set up next to it? Or did you just put diapers in the top drawer?

(I'm really not seeing what the big deal is here, but I'm having trouble explaining what my game plan is to my mom so she'll get off my back!)

For reference, we have the IKEA hemnes 8 drawer dresser, and I was going to buy the Keekaroo changing pad.

Is this the dresser you have, OP? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60245368/ If so, we have the same one and it is plenty long enough to put diapers, wipes, etc. next to the changing pad on top of the dresser in a little diaper caddy/basket or just out on the dresser if you don't want to use up drawer space/for easier access. I don't see why this would be a problem in the least. I'd personally rather have the diaper supplies out on the dresser so you don't have to be opening drawers while holding the baby still as baby gets older/more mobile. If you want to use the top of the dresser space for other things or if it is more convenient, maybe get some wall hanging pockets/diaper storage that you can hang on the wall: http://www.kmart.com/munchkin-diaper-change-organizer/p-024W034188110001P?sid=KDx01192011x000001&pla&kpid=024W034188110001&kispla=024W034188110001P&kpid=024W034188110001 and just hang them up on the wall right next to the diaper changing area.

Yes, thanks! This diaper organizer is a great idea.

I bookmarked this blog post as inspiration for when I get around to organizing all of the drawers:

You can also put some screws into the back of the dresser and there are usually some tabs on the changing pad to hook onto those so it doesn't move around. We have a small changing table dresser combo and there is room on the end to put a small basket for wipes and ointments. Diapers went into the top drawer. Some people said we'd change diapers everywhere, but I liked doing it in the same place every time. And we have a lot of stairs because we're in a split level. We used cloth diapers so just did not have enough of a stash to have diapers everywhere, and I would have to take the wet or dirty ones upstairs to the wet bag anyway.

I don't have an Ikea Hemnes, and I thought our dresser was organized, but, wow, that post is really something. I might need to steal some of those ideas.

I got the crib with a built in changing table.

We did the same thing with the same dresser and it is totally fine. It easily fits a standard contoured changing pad + a couple of fabric bins for diapers, etc. No issue at all!

My sister lives in a large house + she still changes her baby on top of the baby's dresser.

She has a mattress that goes on the top of the dresser and changes the baby on that.

For diapers/wipes/creams, etc. you can install a shelving unit above of like you stated, can even use the top drawer as well.

For dirty diapers, you will most likely need a diaper pail/genie while for only soiled ones, these can be disposed of w/the regular garbage.

Changing pad on top of low dresser for the first two. Third kid, changing pad in the crib.

+1 for the changing pad on the dresser - we are super low tech - I just used command strips so it doesn't slide around and then it won't be screwed up when we are done. easy peasy.
