Where to live? Walkable and red line (might be in search of a unicorn...)

I agree with PP that if you want the easy walkability, you might need to be willing to take a house that's on one of the main streets. If it were me, I'd look for one on Carroll rather than on Philadelphia. I think there are several along Carroll between the fire station and Pine/Park that haven't turned over in many years. Try reaching out to realtors to see if any of them are being prepped for sale. Maybe you could scoop one up before it hits the market. Good luck!

PP here: yes I had in mind that Philadelphia house. Small and on busy street but cude functional, walkable subway and in good state (I visited it). Others like that come every ~4 months id say

I toured that house twice, once with my realtor (who is had a lot of experience with older homes). That one sat on the market for a while, and I think folks may have worried a little about structural stuff. There was a substantial slant to the floors, much more than other houses we looked at in the same age bracket. I never did a pre-inspection, but that may have been why that house was priced where it was and didn't sell immediately.

You could look at Woodmoor...there are some unrenovated/unexpanded homes in that price range. Great family neighborhood, walkable to everything except metro but it's a short (10-15 minutes) bus ride away.

Ah ok, maybe that's why, I didn't do a pre inspection either (it was a tiny bit too small for us and my DH was adamant against busy street so even if I found the house cute enough we didn't consider it)

Depends on how you define walkability. Different people have different distances. South Four Cornera would be a 15 minute walk to the four corners shopping center right near Blair HS and also 15 min walk to FG Metro.

A location that is a 15 minute walk to the shops at Four Corners would actually be about a 25-30 minute walk to the Forest Glen metro. I used to live in that neighborhood and the walk to metro can be a bit of a hike, depending on where we're talking. Also, it's hilly in that neighborhood, so that adds minutes to the walk.

I don't know how accurate Google's walking directions are, but the senior center on Forest Glen says it is a 20 min walk to both Santucci Deli and Forest Glen Metro

The areas around White Flint might not be a bad idea -- they're going to be redeveloping that area so there will be a lot of shops/restaurants to walk to, in addition to those already there.

Check Fleetwood Terrace area 20910. The houses are split level but are in your range. Walkable to the Metro and downtown SS. Zones for pretty good schools.

+1. We've seen a few nice houses that sold recently for under $550. Not a bad walk to DTSS, and there are numerous bus lines.

North Woodside in 20910 would seem to fit the criteria (area right around Woodlin).

The affordable SFH in that area are very cute, part of the Randolph Hills complex, but they feed into Wheaton HS, I think. A few may feed into WJ, but those are significantly more expensive.

In the area east of the Twinbrook station there are plenty of houses under $500k. The elementary school has a low rating but it feeds into a middle school and high school with high ratings.

Townhomes and apartments near Grosvenor metro?

Just curious: Are Rosemary Hills residents worried that MCPS will redistrict the neighborhoods east of Rock Creek Park into the DCC and The Einstein HS attendance zone? Is BCC HS getting crowded?

PP: There's a whole other thread on this issue. Or start a new one.

Lots of places off DTSS for 550! Try Seven Oaks or Park Hills. The supply is a little low so just keep your eyes peeled.
