Traveling with kids...when does it get easier?

The first vacation that we had that was enjoyable is when our only was 4 and we went to Jamaica. That was a lot of fun. Every vacation since then has been great!

Secondly, kids like to MOVE. Sitting in a car for hours is horridly boring for a kid. I like to set my kids up for success/good behavior. I make sure I put food in them before a meltdown comes, I put them down for a nap/quiet time before they're overtired and cranky.

You can't keep them out in the hot sun all day. I've been traveling with them since the oldest was just born and they're both great at it, save for time changes.

I agree with the food before a meltdown, I agree with sticking to nap/quiet time. And I agree with the a no whining policy in general. But locking them in their room for whining at not even 2? I'm just surprised that it works at such a young age. At under 2 my (generally intelligent) kids didn't understand at all what "no whining" meant and would have cried in their rooms for hours if I locked them in there until they got it. They are whining because they are unhappy at that age, not to manipulate. They are older now and whining gets no answer from me and they get the opposite of what they want if they use a whining voice. But I don't lock them in their room.

People are calling you rigid because your post is super abrasive. You have a sample size of 2 so what works for you may not works for others. Butnice work figuring out how to travel with your kids--it may or may not actually be because of you.

You sound rigid. Lighten up.

Funny - the one thing I'm really rigid about didn't even come up here.

So I'll bite: What are you truly rigid about?

What foods they eat. I'm really rigid about what they put in their bodies.

Do they get locked in their room if they refuse to eat their green beans?

Please, oh please remember your sanctimonious post here when these same kids are tweens and teens.
