Fraternities - the beginning of the end?

For those with their heads in the sand, the trend is not a positive one.

Another fraternity made news today, this time NC State.

And a quote from the article about NC State: "At least a half dozen U.S. college fraternities have been suspended or permanently closed in the past week over accusations of bad behavior including racism, hazing, nude photos and vandalism." Say what you want bit this is a lot in one week.

I was in a sorority and loved it. However,I would not encourage my children to join a fraternity or sorority. This kind of behavior by men has been going on since the beginning of time. I love that social media is now putting these clowns on display and that people aren't okay with whatever it is they are doing - racist chants, rape, degregation of women.

A) A fake rape report at UVA
B) An offensive song at the U of Oklahoma
C) A facebook page in poor taste at Penn State

Definitely, the beginning of the end.

you forgot to add the deaths of several greek system members at several different schools. time to grow up skippy and realize it is the beginning of the end. stop wearing a tie while wearing shorts, stop wearing a baseball hat everywhere you go, they are not your bro's and your employer really doesn't care about it so don't put it in your resume.

a few you forgot:

1) six fraternity and sororities at the Univ of Michigan causing massive amounts of damage at 2 different resorts (with a least one fraternity being suspended for four years)
2) An extremely insenstive letter regarding sexual behavior and racial bias during rush week at Univ of Maryland
3) a Washington and Lee fraternity being suspended for tasering a pledge during hell week
4) a University of South Carolina fraternity being suspended for a death at a house

Not a fraternity but:

offensive and potential death threats made by 5 UMBC women's lacrosse players to freshman.

I was a sorority member in college and played lacrosse. I loved my time doing both. For the life of me, I can't figure out what is wrong with all these people.

At some point, the colleges are just going to say enough. The insurance companies will not insure these chapters.

Greek life is for mindless binge drinking sheep.

Two more examples of great fraternity behavior. The racism and sexism that seems to be emulating from fraternities is really disturbing.

Transparency and social media - new

More light is shining on things that have been going on for a long, long time. in 1975, I am sure if you got beaten up at a fraternity party or were over-served, nothing happened - now you fire off a couple of tweets and start a media firestorm. Not condoning any of this behavior - it is deplorable - simply saying that it has been deplorable for a long time and it is not limited to any one campus in this country. The media has a taste for blood on this issue now and any small story or spark will continue to get a ton of attention.

Yep, think many frat members (not all) have gotten away with lots of bad behavior due to non-reporting and ignoring. Now that social media and communications are everywhere, it becomes a lot easier to report and see a lot of this behavior. And, you have a lot of stupid young guys in frats who think they can get away with anything.

Oh lord, all this stuff has always gone on, now the kids have cell phone cameras and social media to advertise it all. I am so thankful we had neither in my day!

Does anyone else think so? DH vehemently disagrees, he was the president of his frat in college. At this point if they still exist when DD goes to college I will probably encourage her to go to a college without a Greek system.

Pick a Catholic college or university. They don't allow fraternities or sororities.

Guess she won't be going to MIT.

Really? Your friends had Facebook pages with photos of naked unconscious women posted?

You had a member of your fraternity die during pledgeship?

Three guys from your school took a video of themselves urinating on a woman and sent it to friends?

Sorry but I doubt behavior like this used to happen. Rape and violence, yes. This is a new level though. Violent porn is probably partially to blame.

I should have said your friends had photos of naked unconscious women. Not on Facebook. Did they invite friends over to see the photos of the passed out women? If someone had invited you to do so would you have laughed and ignored it or said something to someone?
