Has DCPS thought about putting a progressive tax or administrative fee, like 40 or 50 %, on the auction proceeds from JKLM schools? Then DCPS could share the bounty with the schools that are unable to raise their own extra funds.

If they did this, I would be less likely to donate to the auction. I already pay more in taxes than those in less desirable districts and that money is allocated evenly. I don't have a choice over how much I pay in taxes, but I do in how much I donate. Same with my PTA fee--if that were shared out, I wouldn't contribute as much.

I highly doubt you are paying more in taxes than many of us in Columbia Heights, Shaw, Capitol Hill, Shepherd Park, Crestwood, even Brookland. It's funny how Ward 3 parents still think they are the only ones with $1M homes and $200+ HHI. Just got my new property assessment in the mail yesterday

But I betcha' you still want your kid to go to a Ward 3 school.

The cool cliquey moms are definitely out in force. It's one of those nights that feels like high school all over again.

Don't have a kid at a JKLM but could someone tell me what passes for "cool" at Janney? When I am up that way, all I see are women in comfort one shoes, sensible graying hair and Land end vests? is that the cool crowd? they certainly don't look like the overgrown sorority crowd in G town, Palisades etc.

Nope. We are happily at a HRCS. Not trying to take a dig at anyone. JS I didn't understand what PP meant when she said "less desirable school districts"

Janney mom here. I have not seen these "cool" moms. Maybe I am so uncool that I am unaware that there is a cool clique.
If there is, I could not care less. I will attend the auctions with the few other mom friends I have made over the years. We will probably not bid on the summer houses in Europe, but we will have a good time and contribute to the school.

You can deride the" cool, cliquey moms" all you want, but they are the ones who do the most for the school. Does the term "free rider" hit close to home?

NP here. Er, are we not talking about a PUBLIC school? PP has already paid everything she needs to, it's called taxes. And our kids have a right to a free education.

Only taxes? If that's all you intend to pay, then you'll get exactly what you paid for--the basics.

Education is a right not a privilege. If you want to send your kids to a private school go right ahead. The rest of us are entitled to a decent education without having to treat our kids' school like a charity. We pay our taxes, our kids are are entitled to an education.

Wow, I'm amazed at the amount of bad writing coming from the JKLM parents on this thread, particularly 14:54 and 14:44. Kinda frightening, really, if this is a representative sample of DC's best & brightest.

Glad the the grammar police have this under control . . .

moving on

I get the impression the auctions/fundraisers are as much about building esprit des corps as much as $$$. If it was only $$$ it's far easier to just donate cash.

I know you didn't ask about Hearst, but I"m really looking forward to our auction. Our kid has made a good bunch of friends this year and their parents are nice and there are at least 9 couples from our class that are going. I think it will be fun. And from the sound of the PTA meetings, a lot of work goes into the event, so it will be nice to support the parents.

You should go (to yours, though you're welcome at ours). I think you might be surprised.

Yes, clearly this is just the typical complaining about JKLM schools (mainly J). Let's leave positive comments about Hearst out of this mess.

I was interested to hear about Hearst. I think people like to hear what other schools in their area do. Quit the snark.

Believe it or not, this conversation has made me want to go and meet some people. Is it actually a social function?
Does anything else happen besides the bidding? Thanks.
