Vandy and UVA are way too Greek! |

What do I think of? People who couldn't get into better schools. |
Somehow doubt it. You sound ignorant. |
Why do you keep coming back to it then? |
Really? I think that's a stupid statement considering some of these schools are in top 40 in the country. Get real. |
I am sure that all these schools are good academically. Work hard, get your degree, keep working hard and you will do fine in life. College reputations suffer because parents are tired of hearing about all the binge drinking, hazing, slut-shaming, sexual assaults, alcohol poisoning that happen again and again on so many college campuses. Parents dishing out $65,000 a year want to know what the heck they are paying for. This behavior is not a right of passage for a young adult. College is not a prolonged spring break with some academics thrown in. |
I'm a Vandy grad. It's a great school. It is very Greek-focused and if you aren't into that social scene, especially as a guy, it is hard. After freshman year quite a few friends male/female, especially female, transferred if they hadn't gotten into the Greek house they wanted during freshman rush. There are way more people who want to be part of the system than there are spots and it leads to disappointment. It is even harder for guys because the weekend social scene revolves around fraternity parties. Any girl can go but not non-Greek guys. Vandy is actively trying to lessen the Greek hold on student life with the newer residential college system for freshman but it's very embedded in the culture. |
This is very interesting, my son is going to be applying to colleges next year and V is a school he is interested in, however he is not at least for now so keen on a Greek scene. I had not idea it was that prevalent especially with boys...very good to know. I also didn't realize that was why they have such a high transfer rate (someone told me this ) but now it makes sense.....so do you think its hard for a social guy who doesn't' want to belong to a frat to find his way there? I would strong discourage him to even apply if that is the case, really appreciate your insight. |
No on UNC. OOS is limited to 18% of student body. |
Vandy grad pp here- I would say if he isn't keen on a greek scene, look elsewhere. Another part of it is that it's a smaller school, so while everyone finds their niche, it's a smaller niche if that makes sense. I enjoyed going there but I often wonder if I would have enjoyed a larger highly selective state school just as much if not more, with a larger class population and more ses diversity. Vandy is very wealthy and very southern. I was neither when attending (though not poor by any means, no financial aid or student loans or scholarships) but it was a totally different world than I had grown up in. |
This sounds like a horrible social scene. |
will he play a varsity intercollegiate sport? The Vandy guys i know that weren't greek but enjoyed the social scene were d1 athletes who had their own 'crew' via teammates so to speak. |
Hey, I went to GW (law). You're right about the rich. ![]() |
