I'm a Vandy grad. It's a great school. It is very Greek-focused and if you aren't into that social scene, especially as a guy, it is hard. After freshman year quite a few friends male/female, especially female, transferred if they hadn't gotten into the Greek house they wanted during freshman rush. There are way more people who want to be part of the system than there are spots and it leads to disappointment. It is even harder for guys because the weekend social scene revolves around fraternity parties. Any girl can go but not non-Greek guys. Vandy is actively trying to lessen the Greek hold on student life with the newer residential college system for freshman but it's very embedded in the culture.
This is very interesting, my son is going to be applying to colleges next year and V is a school he is interested in, however he is not at least for now so keen on a Greek scene. I had not idea it was that prevalent especially with boys...very good to know. I also didn't realize that was why they have such a high transfer rate (someone told me this ) but now it makes sense.....so do you think its hard for a social guy who doesn't' want to belong to a frat to find his way there? I would strong discourage him to even apply if that is the case, really appreciate your insight.
