I would suggest to you that a preference for diversity seems to be a white thing. |
I do think it's a less common preference - in my experience, most people tend to be more comfortable with people who are like them and some actively seek it out. Maybe others more subconsciously. Whether they are white, black, Asian, etc. |
+1 Which is why we are happy at Long Branch -- 1/3 FARM, 50% White but still good test scores. Yes, on average not as high as the Jamestown/Tuckahoe/etc. but affluent kids do as well there as in those schools (Great Schools used to report out test scores separate for FARM vs Non-FARM). I think my kids benefit from seeing that not everyone lives the same way. |
Why would anyone covet ASF? |
Because lightening bolts are AWESOME! Zap! |
Based on the number of topics dedicated to ASFS over the years it does appear to be a "desirable" or "popular" school. |
What a bunch of hooey. You'll be cheering and checking Zillow every time another low-income area off Route 50 gets an upgrade and the poors are sent packing. |

| These answers make me not want to move to North Arlington |
At least we're honest and not putting on airs. The reality is, diversity does not enrich the educational experience. It's not even a criteria for anyone but a small segment of white folks who fantasize about their school resembling a Benetton ad. They want "safe" diversity. They don't want to hear that the kids self-segregate, the black kids despise the white kids (who are startled to learn anyone would hold them in contempt), and the Hispanics have no interest at all in assimilation (particularly the illegals). |
LOL. As if you had any experience being a family in a diverse school. STFU. |
We are zoned for Nottingham and I am starting to have serious concerns about the lack of diversity and the impact that will have on my children (who are not white). I don't want a Benetton ad. But I want my children to feel comfortable in their own skin and see faces that look like theirs among theirs peers. |
And what, exactly, are you doing in North Arlington? The lack of diversity at Nottingham is not a new development. |
I do speak from experience, actually. A bad one. |

ASF highly diverse. I think my Caucasian Kindergartner may be in the minority.
As its grown to be filled solely by those in the zone- diversity has increased in recent years. |
