BIL got my SIX-year-old nephew a rifle for Christmas. Not a BB gun, a hunting rifle

Good.

I didn't want to be in a house where a six-year-old is handed a rifle. My approval was appropriate, and I think one of the main reasons he decided to give it to him at my parents house and not at home is to see our reaction.

He LOVES the attention his idiocracy brings.

No, your disapproval wasn't appropriate. How fuckimg dare you go to someone else's home and judge them? On a holiday, no less? You sound like a pearl-clutching, narrow-minded scold. I am guessing you know nothing about guns. I am also guessing you are frequently wrong about things but rarely in doubt. You strident bitch. Shame on you.

My parents house, who frankly can't stand my verbally abusive BIL anyways. I am done with him, my sister can live with her mistakes.

I know this, next Christmas there would be empty seats at the table. OP would NOT be welcome.

To all the posters who mock the OP,

Would you be comfortable being a guest in a house where a father has just offered his 6 year old a hunting rifle, and is helping him practice?

Of course, there are MANY other idiots just like him.

Great!

I'm sure BIL LOVED our obvious disapproval. He lives and breaths off of the attention he gets, it's his life. I'm sure we are 80% of the reason he decided to give my nephew the gift at my parents house and not at their own home this morning.

I assume it's also the reason he decided to go on a racist rant about Mike Brown, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin over Christmas lunch or why he thinks it's hilarious to make "go make me a sandwich" and "women belong in the kitchen" jokes all day. He loves to think he is controversial and edgy, when in reality he is just a complete dumbass who peaked in High School.

Troll score 5.

Yeah, I should have stayed and allowed my kids to run around with my nephew and his rifle. I would LOVE to make next Christmas the anniversary of my childs death.

Doesn't sound like that was happening. Rather, nephew was target shooting under adult supervision. You are certifiable.

I wouldn't know, we left before they went outside.

Go ahead, get your kindergarteners rifles as well. Instant evolution.

She wouldn't be welcome at her PARENTS house? Cause that's where she was.

YUP

Me too. Our families are hunters. Six is about the age for a first gun. Gun safety is taught from a very young age and kids aren't allowed to shoot until they take gun safety. My in laws have a target set up in their yard. My BIL and nephew taught my boys to shoot and my boys are pretty good shots - and excellent with gun safety. We spend tons of time at our families' houses.

OP - Your parents permit target shooting in their yard?

It's illegal where I live.

OP again.

I don't like guns, but DH does have one tucked safely in our bedroom. I am not fiercely anti-gun, I'm fairly reasonable.

The issue is that he gave it to his son AT my parents house. We all give our children gifts at our own house before going to my parents for lunch. He chose to give it to him in front of everyone just to cause a scene. There are 9 children in that house age 7 months to 14 years. The majority of my family was obviously uncomfortable.

I have NO issues with teaching gun safety but my BIL did it to SHOCK not to educate.

My parents live on about 70 acres of land. We don't live in DC.

So what kind of redneck upbringing did you have for your sister to find such a mate to be so attractive?

Where is your parents' home and what did they think?

I think you are making this up as you go along.

So perfect place to give the child the gun then, in other words. Despite your histrionic assignment of malicious intent to your BIL.

He and my sister dated in High School, he was an asshole then as well. He has gotten worse as he aged, he isn't attractive anymore so strives for attention in other ways.

My parents were obviously home, it's Christmas. They seemed nervous when he unwrapped it, my mom kept asking if it was just a BB gun. My dad hunts, but he still seemed uncomfortable.
