What kind of car did you buy your 16 yo?

The above stories were about two kids considered very responsible and very mature. A 16 year old should not have it's own car. But it's your kid.

That's idiotic. What does any of that have to do with having their own car? Those crashes could've happened in any car. That's just a really stupid post.

I hope that you all understand that OP is just trying to get a reaction from you with the $30k figure. OP isn't going to do anything.

My first car was an old Volvo. It was beautiful and everyone loved it.

He will be getting my old city car- Mazda 3. Not buying him his own car and wouldn't even if I wear uber rich (he needs to earn his own money).
I will however make sure he gets plenty of practice with me sitting next to him.
I'd buy something boring yet safe, and later upgrade it if he has shown that he can drive safely.

When I spoke to our insurance company they told me if we bought used to not go back more than 3 years. Safety wise old cars dont have the safety features that newer cars have especially side air bags and traction control.

Me thinks OP is a 15/16 YO who wants his parents to get a new car for him.

My DD, who is 12, will (if she is lucky) get a 7 yo Subaru outback hand-me-down. She lucked out, in that we sold the 2002 minivan. She is not getting my VW GTI: too much speed for a kid.

Now, she wants a Mini Cooper, but that is not happening.

My parents were not wealthy (HHI $100k), but saved and bought me a BMW Z3 for my 16th birthday. It was the first year they came out. We had to wait a year for it to arrive.
I was appreciative. It was awesome. I drove it 16 years and nearly 200k miles.

If you have the means to do it, get your child a fun car while they will enjoy it. This same car now that I can afford it myself would not be fun or practical with a 5 year old. I plan to return the favor if my child is responsible.

Definitely agree with buying relatively new-ish, but my 2007 CRV has all those safety features. And I didn't get a high trim level. Even older cars at high trim levels have those things.

That's just insane.

Something big, old and ugly. Don't encourage fast driving.

My auto insurance doubled when I added a new driver teenage boy to it. That was all I could manage so he's going to have to start saving! (And drive well in my car so his rate improves!)

Yes but there are a few other things that your 2007 honda does not have that increase safety exponentially. A 2007 Honda CRV does not have side air bags
