Anyone know this info? (Not the gentrifier poster...)

The only school that ways Spanish dominance is Oyster.

That's actually no longer true. A handful of DCPS are doing this now (this year) not sure if Powell is one.

yes, powell is weighing spanish dominance with a goal of 50% spanish and 50% english -- not sure how other languages fit in to that, though.

I think it's probably compared to the average DCPS school, but probably not compared to an average school outside of the district.

Sorry meant to say that I think it's probably great compared to the average DCPS school, but not compared to an average school outside of the district.

I think the pp means other families who first language isn't English. For example, there are a few Ethiopians in the school.

Can you imagine how great it would be to be part of helping an average school become great! I really feel like Petworth has the potential to flip to a higher SES area over all.

The only problem with this is that the boundary shift now puts a lot of the higher SES at West and Barnard. Almost all of my friends (and us) are no longer zoned for Powell. Is there still a proximity preference? I was told yea by some and no by others.

FYI - Powell lost its principal Janice Docal.

Yes, she moved back to Spain to be with family.

It's tough to build a better school without a strong middle school feed.

Not that it's happening at Powell, but maybe that's why so many parents leave in the early years (PK-1) for a better elementary that has a MS option (DCI).

Considering many current DCI feeder families do not see it as strong, I don't see that as a great example.

This maybe true for some, but three of my neighbors have left other schools for MV because of there MS feed.
