Powell and its potential

15:43 here. Meant to add - obviously sending your child to an up and coming neighborhood school means that it's not going to be perfect. What I have heard about Powell from friends whose children attend is that the school is responsive to parents, the parent organization is active and inclusive (invested in having the PTO represent not just the newer, "gentrifier" families but also long term supporters) and that the children generally are having a great experience. They have adjusted easily to Spanish immersion (one family speaks Spanish at home, one does not).

Does Powell get a waitlist IB for PK4? Are they weighting spanish dominance?

I started another recent discussion about whether us Gentrifiera could help "make" a good school. Powell is a school that has potential- and is an area with lots of higher SES new parents.

Can you imagine how great it would be to be part of helping an average school become great! I really feel like Petworth has the potential to flip to a higher SES area over all.

If you took a less condescending attitude towards others then you might have more success.

21:43 you do come across a bit strong in all of your posts. I don't know that Powell needs you to be its savior.

Powell is already great. Please choose another school. I hope we don't cross paths.

What if instead you walked in and said "I'm really impressed with the things you've done here and I'd love to help. What can I do?"
And don't use the word gentrifiera.

Thank you

You aren't a better person just because you happen to have more money. Quit acting like it.

The only school that ways Spanish dominance is Oyster.

Remember too, the current principal is leaving the school. I don't know if they have named a new one.

We have friends at Powell, who are IB, and some starting prek3. All of their kids are in the early grades but they generally seem happy. They are undergoing a renovation as well.

Many families are still under water or close, and if a flood of houses in Petworth enters the market this Spring or next, it will do nothing but drive the prices down.

Check out the MCPS board, there's a lot to say about buyer's remorse in MoCo.

you would be hard pressed to find ANYONE underwater on their petworth house. Everything around us in S. Pet near metro is selling for 750k or higher in ten days tops. There is not goign to be a "flood" of houses in gentrifying neigbhorhoods near metro. Buy if you can and when you can but if you think it will be better in the spring you are wrong. You might have a a few extra row houses for over 800k but thats it.

If a flood of houses enters the market in this Spring or next, due to people leaving for MoCo or VA, yes it will drive the prices down. That's simple supply and demand.

Yes, you learned that in your Econ 101 textbook. However, this is not what actually happens in the District of Columbia near Metro stations. Not since 1994.

Enjoy Rockville! Or Des Moines, or wherever you are writing from today that has no resemblance to the home of this forum.

We live in a neighborhood just to the north of Powell, and it was our first choice for PreK3. We are on the waiting list with a reasonable number (in The 30s), but we doubt our DS will get in. It's a pretty great school
