What is MCPS doing to keep drugs and alcohol out of schools and can more be done?

She also probably told you she's never drank alcohol and is still a virgin.

All the Chuck Furchill kids are over in my Wootton neighborhood vaping their pot. And the girls like Ecstasy too. Check their ask.fm accounts if you don't believe me.

That is definitely a place in my DD's school that dealing is done. I guess kids figure it is the one place in the school that does not have security cameras. My child avoids the bathrooms as much as possible.

Never came across that title in our school directory. What does the School Resource Officer do and how can they help to keep drugs and alcohol out of school?

It's a montgomery county police officer. Every high school has one. This list is not up to date but you can call your local police district and ask for the SRO.

Do the school resource officers ever speak at assemblies to kids or to the mandatory 10th grade health education classes? It seems that even if no arrests are made, a regular friendly presence of police officers in school would be a deterrent. Even just parking a squad car or two in the front parking lot would cause dealers to think there were police at the school.

They are in the school all day, except when they go to feeder middle schools. The kids know who they are.

I think the school administration sticks their head in the sand re: illegal substances on academic campus for many reasons -

1) If they find drugs, then police are called to the school and it becomes a legal matter

2) The incident is reported as a drug incident; makes the school look bad

3) If you don't look then you don't find - easier then finding and addressing the problem

Same goes for some parents.
