Are you opting your child out of the Fairfax Youth Survey?

The teachings about drugs and sex in FLE are quite different than requiring kids to take an anonymous survey asking if they've had oral sex, if they're gay, how old they were when they first tried Marijuana, and if they feel close to their mother (????). This survey is pure lunacy.

Thanks for this posting because I just filled out the form the other day to opt out and was wondering if I would be the only one. I never opted out on anything but this one did not make me comfortable for my six grader to complete it. Why put something bad in her mind at this young age, does not make sense.

Yes.

I work in the survey world and these types of responses make me so sad. If you don't want your child to take the survey, opt them out. But please don't have them lie.

You can look here for past survey results: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youth_survey_results.htm

Why should my kid give out information for free? My kids know I lie to pollsters, you only get my real opinion and data if you pay me.
My husband did data work years ago, we've taught our kids the basics of survey lying. (Of course based on older standards).

See, this all validates my opinion that this survey is a waste. People are admittedly telling their kids they don't need to (or shouldn't) be truthful, some kids will lie anyways, some kids will answer stuff without understanding the meaning, and it's optional to take the survey. Why are they doing it? I hate this kind of crap.

Tell the truth about the demographic questions and tell the truth on about 60% of the rest and then lie the other 40%, but not too much.

Data folks toss out the outliers (any kid who says he's 6ft and 100 pounds). Ditto if they've done too many drugs. Just dabble.

Responders don't provide their names, what's the point of lying?

NP here. I still don't get the point of lying and sabotaging. Are you trying to punish researchers for not paying you?
People participate in research for the greater good,so maybe students' responses will help shape policy and improve schools.

But this has nothing to do with schools, just another step to replacing parents with the "village". Schools should get back to education, not parenting or playing nanny....

I really wish there were more people that think this way. Unfortunately, it seems like many people like having the schools playing these roles.

If your child has a good head on his/her shoulders, any such survey should not "put thoughts in his/her head".

Would you allow a stranger to ask your 13 year old if they have had oral sex?
Allowing your child to take the survey is doing just that.

You are sooooo naive.

Why are diet drinks excluded? Diet drinks are the same, if not worse, than regular soft drinks. How odd.

"We are argue about the same things in my family over & over again"

I'm not sure how helpful these type of questions can be without any context. I grew up with a family arguing over mom get wasted every night and dad punching holes in the wall, my child grows up with a family "arguing" over picking dirty clothes off the floor & brushing teeth.

How could someone on the DC forum think that there is no money to be make in public policy?
Do you think the think tanks just turn over their research for free? No they waste our paid school time to do the research and then the county wastes money buying the results. If anyone is going to make money, There is no "greater good" on this type of survey.

I opt my kid of out it was well as the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) exam given in late winter to students as random schools in 4th, 8th and 12th grade.

Sorry but my kid isn't going to take any more assessment than required.
