Hiring Tutor(s)

I would call ASDEC.org, Lab School, or look on-line at interdys.org for providers. It sounds like you will need someone with specialized training. A good dyslexia specialist will have training in addressing executive function issues as well as follow a multi-sensory program for language remediation. ASDEC also has math training (which is used by Lab School). Don't be surprised if tutors recommend 90 minute sessions 3x per week minimum with 60 minutes devoted to language remediation and 30 minutes devoted to writing / study skills / homework organization. Since your DC is still in middle school and has an IEP, you may be able to negotiate with the school that his tutoring time counts as language arts time for social studies and English. You are correct that DC needs time for passions and these cannot be neglected. If the school will allow a provider to come in during the day, for example in place of a foreign language, you would be way ahead. Most public schools are resistant to this idea, however.

When younger, DS had OT and speech therapy. Speech went on until age 10. Other than that, DS only had three activities: scouts (once a month), Sunday school and rec soccer in season. He has wrapped up Sunday school. This year he made his HS soccer team and it is affecting his grades since they practice/play everyday. But the season is only six weeks and since he is new to the school, he needed something to make friends. We had to made a decision many years ago to limit what he did, but everyone needs something to do other than school-tutors-homework.

We have had great, tutors for him which have been oriented for remediation. We were lucky that his middle school sped teachers stayed after several days a week for tutoring, but in 8th grade, the teacher did not do it regularly. She also had more severely affected students in his classes and he was on the short end of the stick. He got way behind on homework. This year, I do plan to get him a tutor after soccer season because I can't be his tutor as I was last year. Too many fights.
