When is it socially acceptable to start decorating for halloween?

Yes, I agree that mums, fall wreaths and such can go out early Oct. But ghosts and goblins get put out closer to Halloween.

Why wait for the mums? Just curious. I keep seeing them in stores and thinking it's early, but they look so pretty too. I was thinking about getting some, but I wanted to wait and get them at my birthday like usual (mid October).

I don't put mums out until I'm pretty sure that summer temps are done.

1) it is too early to decorate for halloween. It is just too early.

2) For the QB, get like 50-100 pink flamingos, and place them in her yard. That would be awesome.

They do look pretty. For me, I just like to do it all at once and I'll freshen up my window boxes and containers with fall annuals at the same time, but I wouldn't be opposed to getting a few mums now.

+1. I feel strange decorating for fall when it's still 90 degrees so I hold off until things are clearly fall-like. I hold off on true Halloween stuff until a week or two before the holiday, and only then because my 4yr old loves it. Christmas stuff goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving.

I'll be putting my big ass pumpkin out on Oct 1.

If you're having trouble figuring out when is a good time to get "in the spirit" of a particular holiday there's no better barometer than your local Rite Aid or CVS. These trusty retailers get decked out in decorations for nearly every holiday seeing how they sell a lot of merchandise relating to those holidays. So if the stores don't have witches plastered on the walls and ghosts hanging from the ceiling and jack-o'-lanterns piled up in the aisles for sale yet then it's probably too early.

Put the dried corn on the door and "autumn" flag last week in the middle of the heat wave. Do not Halloween until the second week in Oct. I also have a strict personal rule about no Xmas until 12/1.

Please let me know when you will be doing this and I will come help. I will bring the box o' wine.

What does "neighbor throwing a hissy fit" look like? Just that she bitches to a few neighbors. If so, why give her any power at all. She can bitch all she wants, but how does it impact anyone. Who cares.

But all things considered, I'd say gal stuff this weekend, then Halloween stuff in stages. A few things Oct 1, and then just gradually build. About two weeks before is a good time to go crazy fun with it.

October 1 for Halloween. Sunday after Thanksgiving for Christmas. It isn't rocket science people.

Also mums will be fine beginning this weekend - last hot snap (probably) for a bit, and mums are perennial so a little early fall heat won't be bad for them.
