Movie tickets are $12. Assuming she goes to one movie per week, that leaves $53 for eating out and buying a new toy or something, every week. Does she often go out for sushi? Where does she put all those new toys?

5th graders are eating out on their own regularly? Not mine.. 8th grader occaisionally..

My 5th grader and her friends usually eat on Bethesda Row and then go shopping.

My 4th grader doesn't walk to school by himself. Your 5th graders walk around bethesda by themselves?

Seriously, who cares? If you are not rich enough and your kid will feel bad or not fit in, then don't go.

If you and your kid are self assured and confident and do not care about superficial things and will not feel the need to keep up - go to churchill.

I would rather buy a house I like and can afford, and neighborhood that is pleasant, friendly and safe. Schools work out - one way or the other.

We have a nice house and not great schools. So my kids went to magnet schools. AND because we did not buy our house in Bethesda/ Potomac - we are able to provide great vacations and trips for our kids.

If your kid is bright and hardworking they will do in any school.

I don't know who these PPs are whose BFES kids are getting $50-65 a week. That's nuts, in my opinion. I have a 4th grader at BFES and she gets $3 a week for allowance. And that's only if she does her chores. I think the families at BFES are pretty down to earth for the most part. There are exceptions obviously. If my kids feel like the poor ones when they get to middle and high school, that's their problem. We drill into their heads that they are insanely fortunate even if they don't have all the crap that other do. They should be grateful to have a roof over their heads, never want for food, etc etc. seriously, if they complain when they get older that we're not keeping up with the jones' I will not give even the tiniest shit.

My DD and a bunch of her friends in 5th grade get mani/pedis every week and then out to lunch, usually with a mom. I give her $75 for that.

These are not mutually exclusive.

signed, Bethesda homeowner and vacationer.

p.s. regarding spending habits, my 6th grader eats out at chick-fil-a ~ $5/week. Uses another $5/week via itunes.

The rest he is saving "for a house." Seriously. His words.

You know, I know this isn't the point of this thread, but it drives me nuts when people say that if your kid is bright and hardworking they'll do well in any school. What if your child ISN'T bright or ISN'T hardworking or both? Some of us need extra help for our kids in the form of the actual school b/c we don't have the resources for extra help.

Is he saving for a small fixer-upper for less than $2M, right off River Road? Sheesh.

Who the hell has kids that get $75 per week for spending money in elementary school.
