Beverly Farms/Hoover/Churchill for the Non-Uber Rich

Class consciousness isn't really a factor until middle school, when you meet all the kids from the other 2 elementary schools and have the opportunity to go over to their houses. But, after a while, it just becomes a fact and not a particularly pervasive one. By 8th grade most people forget what elementary school people come from and I have never heard of anyone being teased for not having a mansion near River Rd.

In Churchill it gets better, money-wise, because the kids from Cabin John are comparable to BFES. The real problem in Churchill is cliques, which have nothing to do with money. In some groups buying a car is a "let's see who's richer competition" but the vast majority of kids don't care.

In other words, it's not a problem at all.

Caveat: I'm a guy and don't care about brands names. I also stay away from the partying crowd so it may be drastically different for them. They seem to be a lot more obsessed with flaunting their wealth.

Are you seriously a teen boy? Why do you read the parent forms? Well, I can guess, but seems kind of weird.

Yes, I'm seriously a teen boy.

Why? You guys are really entertaining.

I am a BFES mom of a 5th grader. I usually give her $40 to use every weekend for toys and shopping at Montgomery Mall. It's not that much. Are others giving more?

That's a lot. My 4th grader gets $7/week, but has to put money in savings and give some to charity. And every weekend? Is this the norm over there in the churchill cluster? Feeds into the stereotype of the spoiled kids.

More entertaining to you than playing on your xbox, watching porn or texting with friends? I have to say, there are some crazy parents on this forum. Do you ever think your parents are on here?

Well op, this should answer your question.

Beverly Farms parent. My 5th grade DD gets $65 per week for eating out and spending money. Its pretty low from all of the whining she does. We may increase to $100 for next year.

Troll, right? Oterwise, crazy.

I'm the PP. $65 per week is for eating out with friends, going to the movies and picking up a new toy or something. Seems reasonable to me and in line with her friends. What's your problem?

The fact that this is normal to you is why op probably posted the question, and why we *chose* not to live in that cluster.

For a 5th grader? My DS who is in HS doesn't spend $65 a week for eating out with friends and movies.

If you look at the cars on tuckerman parked for Churchill you will see a large range. Yes a few BMW's but also lots of honda's, older jeeps, etc. You have approximately 600+ kids in each grade. Not everyone is spending large amounts of money going out, tons of vacations etc. There is a large group of this crowd (usually from Potomac Elem) but there are also lots of nice families looking ot provide a good education for their kids and opportunities for college.

we are in the middle. we can provide clothes, a used car and good summer opportunites. We are not jetting off to Aspen for winter or the carribean. we make choices and prioritze what we think is important for our kids. Kids seem to have no problem finding friends or feeling good about themselves.

Movie tickets are $12. Assuming she goes to one movie per week, that leaves $53 for eating out and buying a new toy or something, every week. Does she often go out for sushi? Where does she put all those new toys?
