Advice needed re. 8-yr old still in nighttime pull-ups

We used an alarm and it worked very quickly.

I remember having to wake my mom up at night to have her help me change my sheets. I finally stopped doing it. It isn't something the child can control.

This. DH was 10 when he stopped. The chummie bedwetting alarm worked wonders for my 8 yo DS. It took about 45 days. Our pediatrician was not at all concerned about the age and said we should talk more at his 9 yr physical if he hadn't stopped wetting. OP is there some reason your ped is recommending the mirilax? I would call or make another appointment.

Same experience here. Another example of people making blatantly wrong generalizations

OP here - thanks for all the helpful replies.

I shouldn't be surprised at the vitriol but I guess I am. A little more info - the pediatrician wasn't overly concerned, even at his 8-

Sorry, posted before I was done writing.

Wasn't overly concerned even at his 8-yr checkup. Wanted us to try the weekend cleanse when we could, but with the end of school, our interstate move, etc, we haven't had a good 2-4 days where we could safely plan to be in the house most of the time. She knew that and said we should do it when we have the chance (no rush). The X-ray we had done more than a year ago came up clean, so again, the ped wasn't feeling urgency about us doing the cleanse then.

Since we just moved, I don't have a new ped, and it's a pain to get the old one on the phone. So I was trying to get some advice from those who have gone through this - those that offered that are much appreciated!

Please get the book, it's no accident. If you have a child who is a bed wetter, you should at least read it:

My son finally outgrew bed wetting at age 11. Don't listen to these parents who are saying things about your parenting. They don't have a clue because their little snowflakes are perfect. My DH also bed wetted until about age 10 or 11. Some kids just do.

OP, you said that your ped isn't concerned but have you seen a urologist? I wet the bed until I was almost 10 due to kidney reflux and ongoing kidney and bladder problems.

It did eventually resolve itself, but was very hard on me. At the time there was no such thing as pull-ups so I was often changing sheets in the middle of the night. Very hard on me and my parents.

Some kids take longer than others. Lay off. Don't give him a complex.

agree. But do have him help you change the sheets. At least he has to help do his part but don't make him feel guilty (like why did you wake me up) or draw tons of attraction to it. (You peed again? why didn't you go to the bathroom before etc etc)

If it were me, I would try other methods to ease constipation before Miralax. Prunes and dates in a fruit smoothie would be the first thing I would try. Also do some research on magnesium suppliments, I know that makes me go, and most people are deficicent.

Here's a blog post with some other ideas for constipation.

Good luck. Waking up with a wet bed is no fun for anyone and washing sheets gets old quick.

Don't do the miralax. We stopped the pull-ups for DS at age 7. Then I just sucked it up and I would change and wash the wet sheets. I think that is what helped him, waking up wet. Then slowly, over a few months, he was wetting the bed less and less frequently until not at all at age 7.

No doctor visits, and I didn't blame him, I told him he would grow out of it, and he did.

Our ped said not to worry about bed wetting through age 7, and my BIL wet the bed through age 8.

If the poop is hard and stuck enough that it's causing this kind of bed wetting, roughage etc won't work, it will just add to the bulk. This child needs an osmotic like Miralax to pump water into the colon and soften the huge mass.
