Having been through the admissions process and having seen many, many friends go through it, and having seen the make-up of the incoming classes at our top private every year, I beg to differ. A child coming from a NCRC or another of the well-known schools has a MUCH higher chance of getting into a top private than a child coming from a lesser known preschool. Just look at where the NCRC kids end up going. Yes, The top preschools include NCRC, St. John's, St. Columba's, CCBC, CCUMC and CCPC. Sure, kids from lesser known preschools sometimes get into good private schools, but the majority come from these top preschools. |
| Franklin Montessori? School for Friends? |
I wouldn't include the latter three -- and I'd add Little Folks and River School. |
| Our kids went to WES (and are still there 2 years later) and love it. What a great program! |
| It's not the kids and it's not the preschools. It's the parents who choose the so-called "top preschools". They are the ones who then want their child to go to a top elementary and so on. Those preschools just draw the same social climbers. |
| It's preschool. Lighten up Type As. |
| It is the preschools. The admission directors have relationships with the heads of the preschools and that helps tremendously. |
And lets be clear, "top " here does not mean better program or better kids. |
Exactly! |
I cannot take this seriously, look for where your child will be happiest. They still have a lot of maturing to do before you have to worry about the top anything. At this age the most important education happens with mom and dad. The preschool is just there to set up an expectation of routine and to help children learn some socialization skills. I personally don't feel it will play a huge role in future academics other than that. |
Somewhat true. But fact is a school like Little Folks tends to send half of its graduating class to Beauvoir. Other school might have strong ties to other privates. The preschool you choose can definitely improve the chances of acceptance. |
| My DC and a preschool friend attended an awful preschool not listed above -- chaotic, shouting at kids, not much content taught, etc. They recently discovered three of them from that school are freshman at the same highly selective ivy. Maybe what produces the best learners is not necessarily the best teaching in preschool. |
