This is different, before it was luxury items I could do without, this is a major safety upgrade like abs brakes. |

Every 2 to 3 years.
I get bored with my cars and always am looking for something new. |
This made me laugh out loud. |
| 200k miles. I grew up in a family of mechanics and my uncle who I live down the road from has been a Chevy Service Manager for 30 years. I drive my car to the dealership after hours and pay one of the guys to take care of whatever needs done, using my uncle's parts discount. Once I'm done with the car, it usually gets "bought" by one of my younger cousins who are high school-recent college grads to drive. I use my uncle's discount for a new one and they cycle begins again. I drive close to 60k miles a year, so it really doesn't take me long to go through them. |
| I have a 9 year old crv. I would like to replace it in a few years with something that has newfangled safety features and possibly AWD, but I won't. I can't justify the expense if the crv is running fine. It has 70k miles and runs just swell. Will keep it until it starts need a lot of money sunk into it and/or reliability becomes an issue. |
| When they fall apart. Honda Civic going on nearly 20 years and my husband is still driving it (but it is time to let it go). Meanwhile the minivan is a piece of crap. Its going on 8 years, and I can't wait for the day that I can feel justified getting rid of it. But we hate car buying. |
| 12 year old Ford expedition. Has 150k miles. Will continue to drive and service until we get too many expensive fixes needed in a row. We can do one expensive fix a year if the price outweighs the amount of a car payment. Until they are coming too fast we will keep it. Great car. |
| 200k miles or when it starts to need repairs. We've often gotten 150-200K out of our Hondas before they started to get even slightly unreliable. |
PP here, the other thing that causes us to buy is safety. I.e. we replaced a car w/o ABS even though it wasn't unreliable yet. |
| We drive them til they die, despite wanting a new one. We choose to vacation regularly instead. Both Honda and Lexus are 2003 models. Lexus has 127,000 miles. Only trouble I've had has been emission code related. |
| We have a 10 year old sedan with 90K and an 8 yr old minivan with about the same. We keep up with regular maintenance and hope to keep them on the road for 12 years or more. We usually get a new one when the old one becomes unsafe or undrivable and repair costs more than the value of the vehicle. I am hoping the sedan can go 14-15 years. |

If you buy a Honda, chances are that you will never have the need to buy another car ever again.
'Cuz you know what they say about Hondas...Those cars last forever. They will outlive even YOU. |
| Paid off a car and a few months later it was nickeling and diming me, so I would say every 5 years or until it breaks down. |
We got no insurance discount for a new car fully loaded with all of the safety features. The reason, while there are fewer claims when a car has something like front collision warning system, the cost to repair are much, much higher. From an insurance standpoint it is a wash. |
| I'm like you, OP. I buy a new car about every 10 years and pay cash. So, I traded in my 1991 Honda for a 2001 Audi and then traded in that for a 2011 Audi. My mileage is low, though. Probably around 75k, if that. |
