How often do you replace a car?

Anonymous
I replace my car every time stolen or totaled. I only sold one car in last 25 years. Have bad luck.
Jeep Wrangler Stolen
Mercedes SL Totaled
GMC Envoy Totaled
Mercury Sable Totaled
BMW 5 Series Totaled

Sold my Camry to neighbor who had it 7 years then that was Totaled. He inherited my curse.

I don't see how a car can make it to 200k when it is end of life without getting stolen or Totaled.

I am the pp with the 21 yr old Honda Civic and a brand new Tesla model S, P100D. I am not a car person. It runs. I’m happy. I love the Tesla though. I love gadgets: the Tesla has “ludicrous mode” (named after the movie Space Balls) - 0 to 60 in 2.3 secs: Faster than any supercar/Lamborghini/etc. - a freak’n family sedan - and does not use gas. Really cool. Paid cash.

The Civic - I had a trash truck back into me in a alley. No big deal another scratch. I forget to lock it sometimes and park on the street in DC. It’s still there one time someone went into my car and organized everything in the glove and storage compartment in neat little piles. It runs and never had a repair bill over $400, what’s not to love....

What’s not to love is I find it soul crushing to commute to work or cart my children in a car that feels like I’m traveling in a piece of junk. Brings me down.

Maybe I am too oblivious about people's reactions. Don't care what other people think. I love my civic. My son is embarrassed to be seen in the Honda: It really is a junker and I park on the street in DC. My son tells me sometimes people, other drivers, look at our car and shake their heads. Guess those are car people. We used to live in NYC, Manhattan, and parked on the street because monthly garage fees are what some people in flyover country pay in rent.

One of the reasons we bought the Tesla was because Tesla ended their lifetime free use of their superchargers on Sept. 16... so it was now and our car IS 21 yrs old. My son tells me that the Tesla is "out of my league" LOL! Several guys have told me that this is their "dream car". I like the fact that I can smoke any Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc. in a quarter mile race. The only car that can beat the Model S P100D for acceleration is a 2 mil+ Porsche and there are less than 500 of those in the world.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is “quickest production car” in the world, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.1 seconds — a time that dethrones the Tesla Model S P100D’s 2.28-second 0-60 time.

Dont race for "pink slips" vs a Demon you may end up walking home.

Wow....I really don't know if it's bad luck or is it your driving if you totaled it four times. How much is your insurance premium?

One was a drunk rear ended me at 60 MPH while legally parked in front of my house in middle of night. He left his upside down car in middle of street and my car pushed up on front lawn, he slurred something to neighbor before he ran off. One was stolen off street, One lady t-boned me at 50mph in 30 MPH in a Lexus SUV, three I lost same day in a Flood/Hurricane. I am not even including my wife had one car stolen and one totaled by a drunk driver before we met.

The two of us in our lifetime took out 7 cars. None of the 7 totals were pinned on us. Apparently stolen cars don't count, neither do totaled cars legally parked. The only car that made me laugh was my SL. It is very low to ground, I would bottom out on a speedbump at 2 mph. It was 100% underwater for a few hours. That thing stunk to high heavens and no clue what they did with it as it was in salt water. The rest there were some parts on them at least.

OMG, did either of you have injuries? Hope you and wife are doing okay, that is some serious bad luck.

Anonymous wrote:I'm like you, OP. I buy a new car about every 10 years and pay cash. So, I traded in my 1991 Honda for a 2001 Audi and then traded in that for a 2011 Audi. My mileage is low, though. Probably around 75k, if that.

Same here.

I keep them until they die. Right now my oldest is a 95 Porsche and my newest is a 2016 Range Rover.

I drive a 1996 Doge van. It has 125K miles on it. The paint is peeling. It would cost $2,000 to get it repainted and the resale value of the van is about $800. Seems dumb to get it repainted. It runs fine and I will probably keep it another 3-5 years.

Nope. The Dodge can theoretically go faster than the Tesla but no human can shift that fast and efficiently. The Demon has a gear box. It also takes gas and gets 12 mpg with premium gas. You’ll have to pay a gas guzzler tax if you buy it. Find me a video where the Demon actually goes 0-60 in 2.1 seconds as a straight production car not tuned up. That video doe not exist because it can’t.

Here is a race with the S P100D against the current fast and greatest performance German 4 door sedans. Enjoy!

Interestingly, the Demon SRT comes with only one seat for the driver to achieve 0 to 60 in 2.3 secs:

in 40 years of driving, I have totaled two cars and never had one stolen. You must live in MD or DC.
