LOL! IB program has a less competitive entrance at RM? What are you smoking, delusional? |
| No delusion. RM Neighborhood kids can apply at the end of 10th grade. They are not competing against the whole county. Kids that have been successful in 9th and 10th grade have a decent chance of getting a spot... Several kids in my neighborhood have taken advantage of this. It is a big plus to living in the cluster. Of course it is a challenging program with many requirements so it is not something that is right for some kids. |
No, it is different when the magnet program is so obviously separate from the rest of the school. |
+1 This is one of the reasons we chose RM cluster neighborhood over Wootton. Maybe my kids won't get into the IB program, but at least they will have had the exposure to it in JW, and a better chance to get in in HS. I don't necessarily like the rigorous part of the curriculum, but I do like the fact that it has an international flavor to it. Plus, we like the diversity at RM over Wootton, both in racial and SES - hugely important to us. |
| Wootton is absolute pressure-cooker. Harvard or bust. Have heard great things about RM (except for the Hispanics having sex in the hallway last year, but that was a one-off, in all likelihood) |
Yes. It's different, it for social reason instead of academic reason ... But exactly the same in many ways, but for all the wrong reasons. |
| ^^^^ ... It's for social reasons not academic reasons... |
Can you tell me what prestigious private school had 18yr old sophomores? |
Because the important point in the Richard Montgomery incident is that the 18-year-old was a sophomore? And if the 18-year-old had been a senior, everything would have been just peachy? |
I think the point that the 18yr old being a sophomore and in classes with freshmen and then having sex with one of them (for 25min in a hallway next to the offices and putting it on twitter) is very important. As a parent I do not want my child who will be 13 entering as a freshmen going to school with kids that are 20-21yr old seniors. An 8yr age gap in a 4yr school speaks volumes on the students. Wootton does not have students that repeat multiple grades, constantly disrupt the classes, do not think school is a priority and drop out. It isn't a pressure cooker. It is just full of kids who want to do better in sports, arts and academics and it lifts up the whole school to want to do well. The SES and races play a major part in that. Just look at the test scores, attendance records, discipline records at a glance sheets. It is a shame that it has to be that way but the numbers don't lie. There is enough diversity in Wootton. Many Asian, middle east, Indian, European. They want to excel in school and that is all I care about. |
While there may be fewer problems at Wootton that doesn't mean that Wootton is devoid of sex, drugs and problem children. It just may be more palatable to you because these problem children are not Latino or African American. Frequently, they come from "good" homes but are fuck ups just the same. I know because my brother and his friends were those kids. During my time at Wootton, girls gave blowjobs to boys at the locker banks, drugs/alcohol were plentiful (including during school) and I can name at least five girls who got pregnant (one at 14). Wootton may be a "better" school than RM on many accounts but I wouldn't go around passing it off as a school filled exclusively with angels and choir boys. It's not fair to RM and it's not fair to Wootton. |
| Plenty of 17 yr old sophomores at Landon playing Lax. And it seems like they aren't exactly teaching the greatest choices for sex. |

"An 8yr age gap in a 4yr school speaks volumes on the students."
Speaks volumes on the whole school population? Really? The only students that stay passed 18 are those that are still learning English (or have special needs). I don't think anyone wants a school to be judged by 1 incident involving 2 students. My guess is that Wootton has some English learners that are past 18 as well.. |
How can this be true? Wootton does not send even one to Harvard every year. Are you saying they are all bust? |
| In 2012-2013... from MoCo at a Glance Safety report Wootton had 21 incidents that involved calling Police, RM had 11. |
