Is a typical college campus really a safe place to put your 17 or 18 year old kid?

Several colleges are under review for Title IX violations for not protecting women students vs. rape. So, I don't know why you are getting such casual responses OP.

I mean it's not like you are sending your kids to a war zone in Afghanistan, which is another place 18 year olds can be sent if they make other life choices.

DS had a female companion “study buddy” who had a tendency to get fall on the ground drunk. The relationship was totally platonic except when the girl was drinking when she (on multiple occasions) who tell DS “I want you to rape me” or “I wish you would just rape me.” Wisely DS resisted the offer – “rape” is a scary word. The American Psychological Association is the largest scientific and profession organization representing psychology in the United States. Their study, "Sexual Coercion Context and Psychosocial Correlates Among Diverse Males," was published in the APA journal Psychology of Men and Masculinity. The study revealed that 43% of high school and college men report being involved in "unwanted sexual contact."

The APA study sought to explore sexual coercion in men, and if or how they're influenced or affected by female behavior. The researchers noted, "sexual coercion that resulted in sexual intercourse was associated with greater sexual risk-taking and alcohol use. Verbal and substance coercion were associated with psychological distress, and substance coercion was also associated with sexual risk-taking," in the study.

Among the 284 young male participants, 95% reported that the female acquaintance was the aggressor in their sexual encounter,  which ranged from kissing and fondling to intercourse. Although the sample pool was relatively small, nearly half of the young males said they ended up having sex against their will, with 10% reporting sex was attempted and the other 40% noting the encounter resulted in only kissing or fondling.

I think this is b/c female have been taught that when they decide to have sex/want someone there is no choice for the male. Just watch the movies/tv etc.

I have a boy (and a girl). I worry plenty. "Thriving" in academics has zero to do with something slipped in a drink, an underage girl saying she's 19, you own kids' poor choices. I give my kids the typical talk/warnings and off they go. But yes I worry.
