Hardy no longer feeding to Wilson?

I think moving Ellington near Arena stage is brilliant. Is this a real potential plan?

From what I can tell, there are more than a few folks, not all Ward 3 residents, who have argued that the District should move Ellington to a central location as well as develop any speciality HS in central locations. Moving Ellington would free up the District to turn the building into a new HS.

But I genuinely would like to know if you have heard/know something different.
Oh get your hands off Ellington! It's not going anywhere. If you can convince the administration that you sincerely care about Ellington's students rather than just making a grab for that building, you might have a ghost of a chance to convince them to move. But since this is just about getting an inconvenient group of students out of that building, I predict that they're not going to go anywhere. I wouldn't trust you either.

Sounds like you just want to stay in Georgetown because you think others want you to get out. Spite, in other words -- without thinking that the move might make sense for the kids.

"Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that people aren't out to get you."

Georgetown has a rather famous history of removing a certain population, so people are right to be sensitive about it.

And I say that as an advocate of Ellington being centrally located.

No, it's not. Ellington is staying at their Georgetown location. The renovation starts this summer.

Oh, yes. We want to get Ellington out of Georgetown. Too much diversity. It's part of The Plan. Marion Barry warned us about it.

It makes perfect sense for a city-wide school like Ellington to be in a city-wide location -- like downtown, near a metro.

What got people so upset, was that Michelle Rhee was developing plans to move Ellington without informing the principal, not to mention the students or parents/

IIRC, Rhee's crew was looking at the Logan school near Union Station, which would have been entirely unsuitable as a HS and especially for a performing arts school. Poisoned the well.

Why would moving Ellington near Arena Stage make sense?

Because that is a location that is close to a metro, is more centrally located to the entire city and is close to a major theater in the city where a partnership could be developed.

PP Ellington renovation poster here. I'm a current parent. Ellington already has partnerships with the Kennedy Center, GW, Georgetown and a few others I can't recall at the moment. They don't need a partnership with Arena stage. Ellington's theater is larger than all of those at Arena Stage combined, not to mention the black box theater that will be added after the renovation. My child commutes to Ellington via Metro and bus daily, like most of the students. Ellington families like the location because it is safe. Please stop speaking for the school about moving it to a central or metro accessible location. You don't speak for us or the administration regarding the school's location. We don't want to move. Maybe you should visit Ellington, or come see a performance sometime.

"Ellington families like the location because it is safe."

This is a notable perspective. My kids several years ago were at a charter that was going through some problems, like a dysfunctional board, self-dealing, poor faculty morale, a school head who couldn't manage. Many of the families were at their wit's end and demanded changes. Other parents couldn't have cared less about the management and governance problems. So many said, "All we want is a safe school." Obviously, there is much, much more that matters in a good school, but if your experience has been in an unsafe environment, the paramount consideration of safety and security is not to be discounted.

DC is building a black box theatre at Ellington? It's not a private school and is funded with public money so people should voice their opinions. Perhaps it would be a good location for another high school with in boundary students. Special purpose high schools and magnets etc should be in less desired school sites or CO_LOCATED .

Wilson also has a black box theater. so what. I don't see a reason to move Ellington from its location.

I do or at least it needs to have a metro stop moved near it!

We're glad that you enjoy Ellington, but as DC Taxpayers we have the right to make any suggestion that we choose. Thank you.
