Contemplating giving up spot because of the commute?

Honestly, your problem is that you picked petworth -- which is not in the city core -- and work in SS and Rockville. If your IB truly will not work for you when K allows you in as a matter of right -- why not try grace episcopal school, Lowell, Christ episcopal or one of the many Montessori / day schools near downtown SS?

Ok I love dc but if you both work in Montgomery county why not move there and send your kid to Montgomery county schools?

We both were born and raised in DC and don't want to move. If you haven't noticed people are moving back to DC. With our great school choice, why would we move? Does MoCo offer immersion programs which is what we are interested in?

Actually, they do

I think someone mentioned in another post that MV might have a van pool or shuttle next year. I imagine the pick up spot would be somewhere near Columbia Heights. You should call the school to see whether this would be an option for you.

We were accepted into MV as well! Good Luck.

Yu Ying can pull off buses and carpools from all over the city. If your school is desirable, then it can too.

We also got into our top choice charter, and like OP, accepting would mean a 30 minute commute, at least, each way. Our other choice is a much closer private school where we have a good aid package. OP - did you decide what to do? Such a hard choice!

You really should take the private school and give up the other spot so that someone who really needs it and will appreciate it can take it.

This argument is getting old.

If she needs an aid package (which is not promised every year) then how do you know she doesn't NEED the spot in the other school.

13:32 - We hedged our bets and applied to private since we didn't know what the lottery would bring. We were fortunate enough to get in and get a lot of aid. Now we are trying to figure out the best choice for DC and for us. We will have to give up one of the choices, clearly, which will open a spot for someone else (at either the charter or the private, both of which have waitlists). I don't see your point.

DS could certainly get himself there on metro at some point, but again that is the difference between a <10 minute walk (deal) or 30 minute walk+ride. IMO not worth it because alternative is Deal, not hellhole

Where do you live? There is s bus for upper nw. Call the school to get more information.

Exactly! Take your time to contemplate and make your choice by the deadline. You are under no obligation to do anything other than that. This is an important decision and you owe it to your child to make sure you have fully considered all of his/her options.

OP here, we gave up our spot last Thursday. We didn't have any complaints about our current language immersion DCPS, therefore we are staying put.

The traffic in DC gets worse over time not better. The families who lived closer to school had a better time socially and excluded others who didn't live near them.

OP here, this was one of the few reasons we gave up our spot. The work life balance along with attending school activities etc. played a huge part in our decision.
