If you exercise first thing in the morning...

I signed up for an exercise class that meets at 6:15-7:15 am Wed and Friday. It is with a personal trainer and a small group of other women. It helps that the class is scheduled, and I already paid for it. I tell myself that I don't have a decision to make every Wed/Friday. I already made the decision. It helps not to think about should I go/should I not. Also, I just have to get there, then do whatever the trainer guy says. This works except when I am on a deadline at work and have to work till 8 pm or later. I try to get in bed/asleep by 9:30 because I get up and walk the dog before I go to class.

I do my long run on the weekends, so during the week, I'm trying to fit in 20-30 minutes of exercise. If I were single and had no kids, I'd work out after work (like I used to). Just recently, I realized I really needed to just make myself do it.

My younger kid often gets up at 6:00, and regardless, I have to leave for work before 7am, so it means I get up at 5 or 5:15. I do mostly indoor stuff--we have an indoor bike trainer and free weights, and I usually just do a workout video. If my kid is awake I get her a snack and she watches TV while DH is getting ready. If I can justify the cost, I'll eventually get an elliptical or a treadmill even though I much prefer to run outside.

It's not my ideal, but making myself get up and do it means that I'm back into a workout habit for the first time in years.

Get up at 5. No, I'm not kidding, and yes, I've done that for years.

I always love when people think they can't exercise. Even if it means sacrificing sleep, it makes me a happier, healthier person.

That's lucky -- sleep deprivation did not make me a happier, healthier person, and it *did* tank my supply.

The good news is that even if you have a kid who takes forever to wean, eventually you will have some time to exercise. Getting back to it may be hard after years away from regular exercise, but it is never too late.

I usually exercise in the morning (I get up at 4:45 to do it), but if I can't, my kids are old enough that I can meet their bus, give them a snack, and then stick dinner in the oven and head down to the basement for a workout.
