10:22 Thank you for the posts ... sorry you had to face the snarky comments
We are planning to buy a house in the area and confused whether to go with Waples Mill or Navy or Crossfield. What the other confusion is that some of the Navy kids go to Oakton High and some go to Chantilly High? Its all scattered here and there. |
| I hear that HW will no longer be an AAP center. The program will be phased out so that there will be no 3rd grade AAP class next year, no 4th the following year, etc. So, the existing AAP kids get to finish out elementary at HW, but no new AAP kids will be starting there. |
This was the original plan, but they have no place else to put the Waples kids next year, so that plan, as far as I've heard, is on hold indefinitely. The School Board, in particular Pat Hynes of the Hunter Mill district, wants Waples kids out of HW, but there is no other school that can accommodate them. Admin at HW is great and says they will gladly teach whoever walks through their doors. Long term, Waples kids will probably be out of HW (note that the new CIP calls for a new ES that might draw from Waples Mill, Oakton and Providence, but I think this will be long after most of our kids are out of elementary school), but I think Garza is focusing more on budget and less on AAP adjustments right now. I imagine the school board knew this would happen and that's why there was the big push to shuffle the entire AAP before she arrived. |
| How undercapacity is Crossfield? Seems like they could adjust boundaries or something to make the capacities more equal and maybe fix some of the boundary issues around there as well. |
Fairfax County Parkway is the divider for the high schools. There are a couple neighborhoods on the south side that go to Navy and then end up at Chantilly high school. Everyone else ends up at Oakton. |
so what's the difference. Seriously, what is the difference? |
| Our daughter will probably start K at Waples Mill this year (depending on home purchase). Is it likely that going to HW will still be the case by the time she reaches 3rd grade? Is transportation to HW provided for all AAP students? Thanks for any insight. We are totally new to the system and I'm so glad I found this thread! |
My guess is that it will not be HW by then, but that is only a guess. Nobody can predict how long they will put off making a decision. As for transportation, right now, transportation is provided for all center kids. But every time there are budget discussions, it is on the chopping block. So far, it's been maintained, but again, a lot can change in 4 years. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. WM is a great school, and it will all work out in the end. |
| Can someone point me to the Dashboard numbers for Crossfield? My oldest DS is there, and has been in classes of 29-31 every year. I know last year they hit the threshold for an additional 5th due to enormous classes. I was bummed the LLIV class did not shrink along with the other classes. (Not sure what % are center eligible, but they said they would not pull kids out regardless). I' m just surprised to see all this talk of it being under capacity, we've not seen small class sizes for sure. Are the numbers low in the younger grades? |

Dashboard is located here. http://www.fcps.edu/fts/dashboard/. Currently it says Crossfield is 47 children under capacity
Capacity Maps are located here: http://www.fcps.edu/fts/planning/maps/. Crossfield is listed being at 62% capacity by 2018-2019 Actual class sizes don't exactly correspond with capacity. |
