Sorry, I hope she has kicked her addiction, but she should have known better at age 43 and in my opinion she has no business working in any school system period. Certified or not.

Who cares about your opinion? You obviously know nothing if this is the type of knee jerk bias you have about someone who committed a felony once in her life. Please try to educate yourself before you come back spouting nonsense. What about the follks who have come to FCPS without records only to be fired for sexual offenses or theft? I'd be more concerned about that, then people who have worked honestly for years only to be thrown out on the streets because someone at FCPS didn't do their job right the first time.

Yes they should be kicked out too! This is not a knee jerk bias. No drug traffickers have any business in a school. Her felony was as an adult and in my opinion it is less of what she did but why she made the conscious decision to do it in the first place. She should have known better and someone with such bad judgement as a adult has no business guiding vulnerable children. Not that she shouldn't be employed just not in a school where role models and good judgement play such an important roll.

Yes FCPS should have caught it in the beginning and she should not have been hired but their hiring process, while it needs to be corrected, is not the fault here it is the bad decision of an adult who should have known better.

These people should not be near the children.

Only 8 years! Out of 55 not much. But I am sad for your children hopefully you have family to help you until you get back on your feet.

Kids make stupid choices, young adults (18 - 25) make stupid choices. Older adults make choices and suffer the consequences. I feel very bad for the lady; however, all choices have consequences and some last a lifetime. She should thank God that she got a light sentence - this was a heroin charge, not weed.

Maybe an employment attorney can answer this. She did not lie on her application and was hired to a job in which there were no complaints. At this time, does the school have just and legal cause to terminate her contract of employment. My gut feeling without research says that they waived that right and are barred at this time from barring her without cause. She should find an attorney and find out her options. That is all.

I don't think she should waste her money. I really don't think she would gain anything beneficial.

I don't see how the new administration can be held liable for mistakes made by others years ago. It is FCPS hiring law and that someone 8 years ago missed it is not grounds to ignore the law. I am just glad they caught it now for her and the others. I really don't think suing will gain her anything except for dragging her and her family through more mud.

I agree, despite feeling for her. But it would be nice to see someone advocate on her behalf. I'm no attorney, but can see the liability issues, if something happened and FCPS had not followed their own rules about not hiring ex-offenders. That said, given that she had held employment and not gotten in any trouble for years (and I believe there's research to show if you haven't reoffended within 7 years, you're not more likely to commit another crime than the average person) seems like she had put it behind her and does not deserve to be publicly rebranded as a felon in her job search now.

They've only identified a few that were honest on their applications. I wonder how many checked no and are still under the radar....

If you read the article, you'd see that she applied in 2006 when applications were done on paper. It was human error that it was overlooked. In 2009, the system switched over to an online system where if an applicant checks "yes" the process stops. They had no reason to look for this error until she brought it up. Once she brought it up, they went back and from what I read, looked through every one of the 19,000 paper applications from 1996-2009. That's is where it came up that 6 other employees had also checked yes on paper.

Actually there is still a paper application in addition to electronic. I was hired with FCPS in 2008 and used an electronic and a paper application. I was hired with a felony on my background with the electronic system

If this is an actual FCPS employee, I am less concerned about their past conviction and more concerned about their current communication skills. I am not usually one to parse grammar in posts, but PP, you are not making a strong case for yourself

Math and Reading are great skills.

Some of you should sharpen your skills.

Crime Committed:1989
Conviction: 1992.
Release:1996.
Time since crime committed: 25 YEARS.
Time since conviction: 22 YEARS.
Time since release: 18 YEARS.
Trafficking: Transporting anything from one place to another.
Height of Extreme Sentencing Laws for drug related cases:1988-1994

In FCPS, you can have 30 misdeed noes for spousal abuse and be employed.

She had a non violent felony, told them about it, and now the want to fire her over 8 YEARS later.

Please. This screams discrimination. And I hope she's paid well for the pain and suffering caused both to her and her students.
