Maybe the writers want a co-parenting relationship on the show.
I thought that zeek's willingness to sell the house and Crosby and Julia showing up would make Camille soften a bit. But the previews indicate they put their house on the market anyways. I really miss the big family scenes and the siblings getting together for a meal. |

Re: ad libbing
You will hear it when the scene is laying the ground for the real story line-for instance everyone getting ready in the kitchen to go to school and work, the whole family at the parent's house for dinner. They are supposed to interject natural lines with no meaning- just normal family stuff- they are supposed to talk over each other, interrupt, say things about food, etc. Because it is contrived is sounds awkward. I guess the show is trying to showcase real issues in a family, and that is the appeal of it. But, perhaps the problem is that no one family has all these things at once and the issues are rushed and come to resolution too quickly which makes the show lose its credibility. For those of us who remember 30 Something- very similar in genre, not everything was as rushed or as contrived, yet it was novel and surprisingly familiar. Here we have cancer diagnosed, treated, and cured in a season. Fostering a child all the way to adoption took a season including his complete acquiescence into his new family, a marriage falls apart in two shows, Lauren Graham can go through several guys in 4 shows...(almost gets married, but wait, no...wait, oh ...she'll sleep with that guy, but no...oh...who's that? Wait... why is ray Romano still involved, where are we going with him and her...tease tease but no plot line) See- now it's just become an afternoon soap opera in which we expect all this nonsense to happen. It's very polar, too- there's always a good side, good guy, or bad side, bad guy. This season, we will learn that all schools isolate Asperger's kids...yeah, hand that's going cause eye-rolling. We wanted this to be a little more genuine. |
| I read an interview with the director he said that he wanted to show the reality of the couple who always seemed so happy separating. That they have had tension for years that has escalated. It still makes me angry though, I really hate Joel and don't buy it at all. |
Whatever. I think she looks good. At her age it probably gives a big emotional boost. She was looking sort tired all the time before. Who are you to say she's sad? Bugger off. |
It's tee-vee in the 21st century, Hope! Millenials won't tolerate 1990's pacing for a show. I'm not sure anyone should have to. I like the ad-libbing. In our house EVERYONE talks over each other (family of 6 2 boys and 2 girls, ages 8-14) |

I really like the show, but I do think the plot line with Joel is a bit weird. I don't think they're writing him out, though. I like most of the characters with the exception of Christina. She is so whiny and earnest. The meeting with Max's history teacher got on my nerves... I really think the teacher should have articulated that Max was disrupting the whole class with his tangential facts. And then, at the end of that episode, with Christina researching how to start a school and saying "How hard can it be?" I mean, really? REALLY? She's so annoying.
I've also felt that Camille seems emotionally disengaged from her children, almost passive, until they need something from her. I know they are adults, but I still look to my mother for emotional guidance. Maybe that's just my experience of having a more nosy, but loving, mom.

| "I'll call it villa Camille." I hate her. |
| I think Ray Ramano is great. But isn't Max overlooked at a great kid actor? Maybe it's just because I'm taken in by his character and the issues faced by families with kids on the spectrum. And if one actor had to win an award for the show, Kristina would be among my last choices. I did like Haddie (studying so far away that we never talk about her), I like Amber. I think Drew is lame. But the stalwart Joel up and leaving is so out of character it's silly. |
| I agree with all of the above. Still like the show but finding it harder to take it seriously. I think the "Sarah is now a successful professional photographer" plotline is absurd. Remember when she was just starting out as a play write but got her work staged within weeks? Must be nice. |
Ouch, hit close to home, huh? |
Yeah, really. As a "fuck up" she seems to have incredible good luck. Also it seems that every man who meets her wants her. She's pretty annoying. |
And who is paying for Berkeley? |
| I agree with pretty much everything said in this thread. The Joel/Julia storyline makes NO sense whatsoever and it is infuriating. Glad Amber's dipshit fiancé is out of the picture, though. About time. |
Yup. I hate when shows just gloss over this. The reality is she would either have to be getting a full scholarship or she wouldn't be going. Work studying would not cover it. Her mom is a part-time photographer, FFS. |
can I just say that Drew has morphed into a little One Direction hottie:
So adorable.
